Continued from X
A small scoff of a laugh left his lips, with no change in his expression. That was was probably one of the worst things he could’ve heard as a response, but at least Vance could admit it. Gary didn’t have to. He knew that he was fucked ten ways to Sunday, especially when the student body seemed to take a liking to constantly reminding him of that.
What they didn’t seem to know, or care about, is the fact that he was trying. He was playing the role of guinea pig with these medications, letting them screw him over left and right and set him back to square one.
But there were a select few that understood his case, and at least he had them to be thankful for.
Flicking ash off of his slowly burning cigarette, he wondered what he would do from here. The only thing he could do was wait for this new medication to build up in his system, but he wondered if he would even make it till then. He already broke once, healing lines of shame littering his covered arms.
“Maybe it doesn’t.” He said, more to himself than Vance. “Maybe it never will.” That was a reality that Gary tried to ignore, but sometimes it was hard to just sweep it under the rug. “Maybe this is life for me.” Another scoff, wry. “Guess I deserve it.”
“I can tell you you’re not alone, because I’ve felt like this too.”
Piercing gaze burning an imaginative hole into the cold cement, Gary gently cradled a cigarette as best as his trembling fingers would let him.
No one that was closer to him was answering, and he needed someone to be around him. The world that surrounded him felt so unstable, so prone to falling apart. Who else could he go to? Someone who wouldn’t take pity on him, but help him get through this.
Then he remembered. Vance.
After forcing himself to leave the safety of his dorm room, he ventured out on a search to track down the greaser. One look and Vance seemed to know. That alone felt a little comforting.
“How do you deal with it?” He finally responded as he caught up with present time, refusing to break his gaze. It felt like his only connection to this world, and if he broke it, he’d fall apart. His voice was strained, trying to keep himself composed. While he trusted Vance enough to go to him, he couldn’t show any more weakness than he needed.
“When does it get better?”
