Verba Deponentia Quae Casu Ablativo Utuntur / Deponent Verbs That Use the Ablative Case

According to Bradley’s Arnold Latin Prose Composition, section 281, the ablative is used with the verbs utor, fruor, vescor, potior, and fungor because of their meanings:

utor, “I serve myself with”:

fruor, “I enjoy myself with”:

vescor, “I feed myself with”:

potior, “I make myself powerful with”:

fungor, “I busy myself with.”

The fact that they have a reflexive or middle sense (“I [do something for] myself”) might be part of the reason that they are deponents.
