Character name: Tom Ripley
Appears in: The Talented Mr. Ripley (film)
Seen as: Gay or Bisexual
But really: An initial case of mistaken identity allows Tom Ripley, a working-class young man, to make the acquaintance of Dickie Greenleaf, a wealthy young scion who lives a life of pleasure and amusement in Italy.
Tom quickly becomes infatuated with Dickie, never wanting to leave his side and obsessively studying his tastes, style and mannerisms. He at one point confesses to Dickie that “it’s one big love affair”–“it” referring to his relationship to Dickie and his immersion in Dickie’s high-class, big-spender lifestyle; and he proposes that he and Dickie live together just the two of them, trying to get Dickie to admit that he too is in love with Tom the way Tom is in love with him. Tom’s infatuation also manifests itself as a desire to be Dickie, and in fact circumstances come to pass that give Tom his wish, and allow him to assume Dickie’s identity.
Near the film’s end, Tom falls for another man, Peter, whom he takes on a cruise with him. There is mutual romantic attraction between the two, and they share a bed (as well as a lot of intensely-meaningful eye contact and knowing smiles). Tom seems to be deeply in love; however, when he realizes that his connection to Peter could be the factor that gets him caught for his crimes (he’s killed two people and assumed one of their identities by this point, among other things), he feels compelled to kill his would-be lover in order to protect his secrets.
Meanwhile, Tom has a quasi-romantic relationship with Dickie’s former girlfriend, Marge, and kisses another woman, Meredith Logue.
The story is set in the 50’s, so rather than stated outright, the story’s queer content is heavily coded. Due to Tom’s sociopathic nature and the fact that at his core he cares about no one but himself, it’s hard to determine how much of his romantic attractions to people are real, or coldly-calculated performances on his part, or just extensions of his immense love for himself. Thus, it’s hard to characterize him sexually. He may be gay, bi, or, quite possibly, ace; on the basis of behavior alone, however, he is bi.
Tom Ripley is an example of the depraved bisexual trope.
With many thanks to RT for this write up.
Character name: Reaver Appears in: The Fable game series (Fable 2 and 3) Seen as: Interpreted as straight
But really:
Reaver, in Fable 2, is introduced to the player as the Hero of Skill and the unofficial ruler of Bloodstone.
He is a gruesome person, who would kill anyone and their family, if he had to, which becomes apparent when you first meet him, as he fatally shoots an innocent photographer for forgetting to tell him, that his picture would take 3 months to be developed.
Other than that and his hedonism, not much about him is revealed in the story of the game, but in Reaver’s diary, he mentions having countless sexual affairs and multiple lovers at the same time by name: Ursula, Penelope and Andrew.
In Fable 3 Reavers sexual impropriety and psychopathic tendencies become even more apparent, especially during the quest Reaver’s Wheel of Misfortune, as he makes you and your companion fight different enemies in an arena in front of his party guests.
One thing his butler Hatch mentioned during the beginning was that his master often abused Hatch to rid him of his vulgarity.
I’d like to mention that, while Reaver is a canon bisexual character, he is also quite the psychopathic villain and his sexuality is mainly used to put emphasis on his hedonism and amorality.
Amongst the npc’s of the 3rd game you can also find bisexual regular citizens, farmers, workers and royalty. However in the 2nd game of the franchise, the only bi npc’s are on the knothole island and also possess traits such as promiscuity and vulgarity.
With many thanks to dietrichhering for this write-up.
Shout out to canonical depraved bisexual versions of characters from an alternative universe. Gotta be one of my favorite genres.
Character: Tyrell Wellick Appears In: Mr. Robot Commonly Misinterpreted As: Straight or gay
But Really: Tyrell Wellick is married to a woman, Joanna, whom he is loving towards, and is shown to have slept with at least one man, Anwar.
Note that the way in which Tyrell goes after Anwar is a textbook depiction of the “depraved bisexual” trope, especially given that Tyrell is portrayed as a manipulative narcissist. This is unfortunate. Nonetheless, Tyrell is bisexual.
Tyrell’s attraction to men is best seen in his relationship with Elliot Alderson. Tyrell lights up around Elliot in a way he does not with any other character. He tries to get close to Elliot (kidnapping him to offer him a job; inviting him to lunch); confesses intimate details of his life to him after slipping in to his apartment; embraces him on multiple occasions; practically has phone sex with him and generally wears a smile of dazed love when he is around him.
Notable quote: “I want you to be where you belong. Here, with me.”
The actor who plays him, Martin Wallström, has spoken about how he thinks there is a “tension” of a romantic/sexual nature between Tyrell and Elliot, and showrunner Sam Esmail has said on twitter that he thinks the “Tyrelliot” ship is “awesome”; he has also talked about his awareness of the disservice of queerbaiting.
Spoilers for Season Two of Mr. Robot:
Do you think they're going to keep Mason Verger bi?
I know that Bryan is all about positive representation of women and LGBTQ+....
That moment of you watching Basic Instinct after 20 years, while doing your nails, and both can easily fill the academic purpose quota for the day.
