The student outgrows the teacher
The tears in her eyes threatened to spill over numerous times, but she did her best to control her emotions and to process the information she had just heard. She slowed her breathing and regained some composure before meeting Annie with a determined stare and nodding subtly. They sat in silence for a few moments, each person replaying the conversation in their head, attempting to make sense of it all.
Just as she thought she had somewhat recovered from the horrendous news, she remembered. How could she have forgotten? The mere prospect of it had portrayed itself in her dreams and nightmares for over a month, causing tears and panic and strife. How, in such a critical, horrible time had she allowed herself to forget?
She was pregnant. Living inside of her was a new life, a combination of their DNA and a product of their love. A tiny embryo had settled in her body, the beginning of her new life as a mother and caregiver, and she had temporarily forgotten.
Her heart dropped once more and her breathing, once again, sped up. Her chest hurt, physically hurt, and she felt nauseous and dizzy. Her mind raced with possible solutions, and worst case scenarios and all heightened her intense fear. He’d be gone for eight years, and she would have to raise their child...alone.
She couldn’t tell them, not yet, she didn’t know how far along she was and anything could happen. But she needed to know if there was a possibility he could return home to support their growing family.
She spoke up quietly, her voice just barely a whisper. She sounded innocent and naive, and oh so heartbroken.
Kennedy: “W-What if we want to s-start a family?”
Her question was obviously unexpected as she was met by shocked expressions and ajar mouths.
Annie: “I...uh...well sweetie, you’re not thinking about starting one now are you? You’re so young”
Kennedy: “No! N-No...but when we do...what would happen?”
Derek: “Well uh. Assuring you were married by that time, yourself and the child could move into one of the base’s Residential Houses.”
Kennedy whimpered.
Kennedy: “B-But he wouldn’t be allowed to come home? At all?”
Derek: “Well, other than the allotted ten days of Paternity Leave and any other leave he acquires, no, he wouldn’t.”
Her world was crumbling around her and she couldn’t do anything to stop it. She felt guilty, she felt angry but mostly she felt betrayed. At that moment she disregarded any self control she possessed as tears began to overflow and stream down her face. She yelled and screamed at her fiancés father until her voice grew hoarse and her sobs became uncontrollable. Annies kind words and gentle tear-stained face could no longer calm or control Kennedy’s sorrow. The two women muttered melancholy insults through trembling lips as they buried their faces in their hands and sobbed.
Derek, who had been sitting in silence as the two heartbroken women shamed and humiliated him, decided he could no longer take the mistreatment. In a flurry of rage he forced his chair back and stood up, slamming his hands on the table in front of him in an outburst of fury.
Derek: “How dare you speak to me like that. Both of you. I do my best for this family and have nothing but my wife and children's best interests at heart. He’s not going to die, he’s not going to get injured. He’s learning important skills that will aid him in life. Your behaviour tonight is disgraceful and appalling, no woman should act like that, ever! I understand you’re upset but don’t either of you dare to blame it on me. I only encouraged this, but he had every opportunity to say no, to go to his stupid Art College. He chose to go, he enlisted. I am not the monster here.”
His breathing was ragged and harsh as he leaned heavily on the dining room table, making a weak attempt to compose himself. He turned to Kennedy, brows furrowed and eyes burning with passionate contempt.
Derek: “You. I always knew you were too brash, too disrespectful and crude for my son. You’ve just proved that. I’m disappointed in you Kennedy, I thought your parents had raised you better than that. You can see yourself out”
And with that, he quickly stormed out of the room.
He'll do whatever she says
~The Fitzgerald Residence: February 1st: 7:31pm~
As Kennedy entered the all too familiar house she was greeted by a tired, yet cheerful face and a large hug. Annie had always been such a warm, inviting person and Kennedy had always loved speaking with her, so when she received an invitation to dinner she quickly accepted, despite the tension between herself and the man of the house.
Annie: “Kennedy, dear how are you?”
Kennedy: “Hi Annie! I’m okay, how are you?”
Annie: “Oh you know, I’m...I’m okay too”
The two paused and glanced at each other with knowing eyes. Both women understood how the other felt as they had both been separated from someone they loved dearly. In an attempt to distract both herself and her host, Kennedy spoke up once more.
Kennedy: “You look great Annie, I should have dressed up a bit more”
Annie: “Nonsense you look wonderful! Dinner’s almost ready if you want to-”
A middle aged man shuffled out of the kitchen, his posture bent and his head hanging low. He looked uncomfortable and somewhat irritated and Kennedy noticed the look of disdain shared between the older couple. She had no doubt that they had been arguing before she arrived, in fact, she wondered if they were ever pleasant with each other behind closed doors anymore.
Derek: “Hello Kennedy”
Kennedy: “Hello Derek”
Derek: “How are you?”
Kennedy: “I’ve been better to be honest. How are you”
Derek: “Erhm...I’m alright...good”
Her annoyance towards the man shone through in her tone of voice. Her glaring eyes and furrowed brow also portrayed her emotions to both individuals in the room. Awkward silence filled the surrounding space as neither party spoke and Annie frantically attempted to make peace as she so often did.
Annie: *clears throat* “Okay well um as I was saying, dinner’s almost ready if you want to go sit down in the dining room”
Kennedy: “Sure thing Annie, do you need any help?”
Annie: “No no, you’re the guest! You relax, get yourself a drink from the tray, Derek come with me”
