Derek Gibbs aka Dr. Strangelove, vocalist of the late-’70s London-based punk rockers The Satellites in his uber-iconic beer-spitting moment, captured by Peter Gravelle in 1977 and immortalized through the legendary “New Wave” comp that introduced many US punk artists to the UK market (such as the Ramones, Dead Boys, Patti Smith, New York Dolls, the Runaways, the Voidoids and others along with some UK acts), released in ‘77 on Vertigo Records (the band’s bass player, John Johnson, is also seen in a swimming cap in the background in his own epic moment).
This in-your-face punk-defining image has also been used in posters, album sleeves, posters, t-shirts and the Trainspotting films.
