Back in the studio as often as possible to create new work in time for the Oxford Fine Press Book Fair in December. First order of business is setting type for the maintenance-themed, Franklin Gothic focused, Understanding this Book book, somewhat of a sequel to 2002’s Alchemy.

Some days are all about maintenance. An afternoon of redistribution of recently cleaned, printed, and cleaned again Franklin Gothic into cleaned out California Job Cases lined with black mat board for ideal work environment in the future.

Hand set Franklin Gothic Condensed after setting the entire case on its feet in the bed of the press, scrubbing it clean, printing it for pages in the forthcoming title, Understanding this Book, and cleaning again before redistributing it all back into a clean California Job Case lined with mat board.

The type cleaning and organizing bug is infectious. Decided to empty out the 24 pt Franklin Gothic Condensed and Italics, although this time will just scrub it all down in the bed of the press instead of submerging it all in mineral spirits.
Surprise! It’s an idea for making a book about the process…imagining pulling a print of a bed full of type leads to imagining page spreads of the same, leads to a quick sketch of what the pagination of such a book might be, leads to let’s get down to business and fill up the bed, and if the 24 pt doesn’t fill it up, well, then might as well clean and tidy up the 18 point, too.
