We still mad about Tip Drill?

Last week I watched an interview on Huff Post Live with Nelly. The interview discussed Nelly’s reaction to a boycott led by Spelmen students in 2004 when Nelly visited the campus for a bone marrow drive. The drive was in support of of his older sister who lost her battle with leukemia a year later. Nelly remarked that he wanted to “kick somebody’s ass.”

To this day, whenever there is an argument discussing hip hop and its exploitation of women, particularly black women, the Tip Drill is still the main point of contention. We are still reminded of the infamous credit card swipe and we still crucify Nelly as though he is solely responsible for the hypersexualization of black women in hip hop. 

But, I would argue that Nelly is NOT hardly responsible. In fact, I was more appalled by the uncut version of Ludacris’ “Pussy Poppin on a Hand Stand” video. All jokes aside, if we analyze how the entertainment industry works, we would understand that attacking Nelly will not solve the problem.

Take these things into consideration:

Was Nelly responsible for the distribution of Tip Drill or, for that matter, any of his videos?

No. His record label is in charge of distributing artist products.

Did Nelly call BET Uncut several times a week begging them to play Tip Drill?

95% sure that was not the case. BET is responsible for its content and its rotation.

Is Nelly responsible for its hundred thousand YouTube hits and increasing popularity over the past decade?

Not entirely,especially in the age where twerk team videos get more hits than news segments on police brutality. 

Nelly isn’t 100% innocent but he is definitely not the source of the misogyny in hip hop. If you want to keep a tree from growing, attack the roots, not the fruit. We aren’t placing enough of the burden on these industries that control and survey all of the information we receive. 

If there’s one thing you can take away from the new TLC Movie – besides Lil Mama’s surprisingly fantastic performance – it’s that musicians are just passengers on a tightly run ship. Their sole responsibilities are to be the faces of a marketable idea. Although Pebbles had no idea that three hot chicks in baggy clothes would get as much hype as it did, everyone and their mama knows that Sex is the biggest, oldest, and richest industry on the planet.

My argument for hanging up the Tip Drill crutch is my same argument for why porn is legal and prostitution is outlawed: It only sparks a conversation when it’s visible. Every weekend, the doors of Stadium nightclub, one of the nation’s top strip joints in DC, are flooded with gentleman and ladies all ogling over voluptuous women dancing on stage. As you read this, somewhere in the world is a party where women are busting it wide open for dollars like the ladies in the Tip Drill video. However, when Nelly documented this activity and it gained a lot of attention, then it became a problem. THEN it became the poster for hypersexualization of black women in the media. 

A bigger and more relevant conversation is the shit we dont see, the little girls sold into human trafficking, the correlation between prostitution and unemployment rates, the underhanded police deals that allow these criminal acts to thrive.

Let’s face the facts:

None of the ladies in Tip Drill were held on set without consent.

None of the ladies were forced for perform.

None of the ladies were underaged.

(i Hope) none of the ladies left without pay.

And, as of yet, none of the ladies have come out and spoke of mistreatment and abuse on set.

Yet we still praise the films of Roman Polansky, a noted child molester who fled the country to avoid arrest. (Nicki Minaj also refers to herself as Roman Zo-lansky, which I find disturbing as hell). Or, how about photographer Terry Richardson who is a registered sex offender, has been ridiculed by several famous models, and still shots covers for Vogue.

But, as I said earlier, Nelly isn’t completely off the hook. There are some things he could have done.

Nelly COULD have addressed the ladies of Spelman U if he knew prior to his visit that there would be a boycott concerning his integrity and the nature of his video (not sure if he knew or not – feel free to check me on this)

Nelly COULD have been a Hip Hop martyr and spoke out against the misrepresentation of black women. Dropped a track or, even better, a conscious, profanity-free mixtape artistically expressing what I just explained here.

But, as I said earlier, Nelly is just another passenger on a tightly-run ship who is trying to get his slice his own way. Just like the rest of us.

Let’s face some more facts:

Aside from Tip Drill, Nelly is also best known for being the forerunner in hip hop’s commercialization with pop hits like “Ride Wit Me”, “Hot in Herre”, and “Pimp Juice" 

Though he sold a lot of records, he won’t go down in history as a rap legend.

I mean, can we really expect the maker of "SweatSuit” to jeopardize his shaky image because it’s the right thing to do? Probably not, though it would be nice and impactful  Plus, there are dozens of other rappers who take on that responsibility with their music and can barely get a spot on MTV Jams. 

Who’s fault is that?

And I hate to bring Brother Kanye into this argument because I know we'e all getting a bit tired of his antics. However, when you really get to the meat of what he’s saying – which is somewhere past his ego and news-friendly nasal voice – he actually is saying some real shit. These industries need to be infiltrated by radical thinkers so that there can be fair representations of minority groups on screen and on the airwaves. Women of all races strip, as they have a right to. But images of black women running for mayor, working for NASA, or owning a major business come a dime a dozen because they aren’t considered marketable by these white male-dominated corporations. Rather than boycotting Nelly, how about boycotting cable channels, radio stations, and record labels

Better yet, how about boycotting their parent corporations. 90% of America’s music industry is controlled by three multinational labels – Sony, Warner, and the French-owned Universal of which is also the parent company of Nelly’s label, Derrty Ent.

My point is, when it comes to fighting the good fight, educate yourself on where you’re throwing your blows. The problem with news media is that it creates a virtual reality that stresses the problem instead of the solution and, in turn, wipes blood off the hands on those who are truly responsible.

We don’t have to hang up the Tip Drill debate, but we should change its discourse. The misrepresentation of black women in the media is not just the artists’ problem.
