2025-07-02: Savanna Encounter Map Description and Modifiers
Each terrain type has different ways that it affects the people traveling through it, usually through small bonuses or penalties. This terrain-specific table is used in conjunction with a more general elevation-focused table to provide about a 60% overall chance for a modifier to be in effect.
Savanna Setting/Modifiers (d10)
Brown grass covers the whole area and can be set alight as long as it is dry. Flames burn through all the grass in a square in one turn, and then spread outward 5 feet at the start of each turn on initiative count 0, doing 1d6 fire damage to a creature in a square on fire.
Soft ground in the area cushions impacts. All fall damage is reduced by 1d6, and the maximum jumping distances for each creature are reduced by half.
Sticky mud clings to the footsteps of travelers; movement speed for non-airborne creatures is reduced by 5.
Haze (smoke, pollen, dust, fog, or something else) covers the area and limits visibility to 60 feet. Beyond this distance, ranged attacks suffer a -5 penalty to hit.
Large-scale figures or geometric patterns are scraped into the ground
The crowns of the trees make a gently-shifting patchwork overhead, moving close, but never touching each other
A shallow and dry riverbed passes through the area, its banks speckled with trees
The continous hum of insects fills the air of a mostly-treeless plain
Between the trees, the sparse grasses reveal ground that is cracked and fissured from intermittent drought
Reddish dust kicked up by the cycles of rain and drought coat the trunks of the trees here
