Quest for Desertfest: Belgium, Day II
By Hannah Lowe
In honor of that hallowed internet tradition known as #TBT, we're continuing the series we left over the holidays: Hannay's big adventure at Desertfest Belgium last fall. Were you there during the inaugural year of this fest? We'd love to see your pics! For now, relive the excitement via Hannah's recollections. All photos by Hannah Lowe. (BillyGoat)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
It’s day two and I was surprised to see so many fresh faces after the night before. A 3pm start meant an extra 3 hours of rocking out. It was always going to be the biggest day of the three.
COWBOYS & ALIENS
First up on the Desert Stage were local Belgium blokes Cowboys and Aliens. Their name describes their music perfectly.
Even though the room didn't quite fill up to capacity, they still smashed it with their aggressive, true stoner rock tunes. It’s not hard to tell they’ve been around for a while and know exactly what they are doing.
I was happy to arrive early to see these guys!
STEAK
This may sound silly, but being vegan it took me a little while to give Steak a listen to. I only gave them a fair go a couple of months before the festival, but am glad I did; otherwise, I may have missed this hard hitting, fuzzed out stoner rock performance!
Lucky! Another band here at Desertfest that brought the fuzz, but this time on the Canyon Stage. From word go, the crowd exploded into a mosh topped with crowd surfing. Yeeeew!
Throughout the entire set, Steak created a high energy atmosphere that was felt by all. They well and truly delivered and left us wanting more. Highlights for me: "Liquid Gold" and their closing song "Rising."
PALLBEARER
Wow. Mind and soul absolutely blown. From the looks on stage you could tell it wasn’t just the crowd who were over the moon with their performance. A definite festival highlight for me and others I've spoken to who experienced the magic of Pallbearer.
The feeling I had during and after this set was almost indescribable. With beautiful angelic like, tear-jerking vocals, I’m afraid I won’t do it any justice trying to describe it. Looking around at everyone, we were all experiencing the same thing--in complete awe and full of emotion, we had been taken to another universe.
They played one of my 2014 favourites "The Ghost I Used to Be" off the new record ‘Foundations of Burden’ (2014) and I was almost brought to tears. The set ends, but they return shortly after with one more song, not because it’s a typical encore, but purely because they had more time to do so. Both the band and crowd clearly didn’t want this to end. Breathtaking!
YOB
Opening with "Ball of Molten Lead" off the 2004 album 'The Illusion of Motion'(2004), you couldn't help but close your eyes and let Doom Lords Yob whisk you up and take you away to another realm. With a combination of eerie, high-pitched, almost screaming vocals and their legendary evolving riffs, you feel connected whilst almost immediately start floating away.
So then, how could I have made the fatal mistake of misunderstanding the timetable and getting confused with set times? Because that’s just what happened… I had to break the spell they had me under. I was then only able to catch some of "In Our Blood" off their new record before leaving for a quick glimpse of The Shrine and Karma To Burn. Hopefully, I can redeem myself if they come to Australia to tour ‘Clearing the Path to Ascend’(2015). So sorry guys!
KARMA TO BURN
Another performance that’s up there with my favourites is Karma To Burn, who absolutely tore the roof off upstairs on the Canyon Stage! This instrumental, southern rock, power trio are perfect proof that there doesn’t need to be any vocal presence to engage an audience and truly rock out.
They stuck to a full set of instrumental songs, apart from closing song "Twenty" (all Karma to Burn songs are numbers) where 2 dudes from the crowd jumped on stage and timed "Tequila" perfectly. Lead guitarist Will smiled and looked pretty impressed, and this set the crowd off into a frenzy!
Another memorable moment was when someone spotted Rob, the band's bassist, having a swig of red wine from the bottle and screamed out for him to share it 'round. After a little chuckle that’s exactly what he did. This happened a few times throughout the night.
I got to meet Will shortly after and chatted away about the mixed feelings of finishing up this final show on their European tour.
ELECTRIC WIZARD
Closing Day 2 on the Desert Stage were obvious festival favourites, Electric Wizard.
However, I only managed to squeeze in the last few minutes of their set after catching Karma To Burn, and even that was a bit of a struggle. I was only able to see from the very back doors into the stage where it was near impossible to get any closer, but still got a taste of the atmosphere. It was jam packed, but I could tell the crowd was hooked, knowing they had just experienced a performance like no other.
Two days down, one more to go!
