Are traditional design degrees still relevant?

The conventional route toward a career in design—through college—is rapidly changing.

As someone without a traditional design degree and who is pursuing a more hybrid course this was certainly an interesting read and one that makes me more confident that my lack of an undergrad background in art or design wont hinder my career prospects.

Ann Willoughby of Willoughby Design (Kansas City, MO and San Francisco, CA) Results are in from AIGA’s 2016 Design Census - and Willoughby has gone through the data to analyze how women and men responded at various times in their career path. Infographics, above, help graphically tell the tale. “Younger women are on the move and outnumber men until they reach Senior and Leadership levels. Younger women earn the same salaries as men. Younger respondents “want a life”, flexibility along with 40 hour work week. At the highest two levels (Senior and Leadership) there is a noticeable shift.  Men outnumber and out-earn women at both levels. These leaders are also older and likely represent an important transition in the profession.” (source) Note that if you go to the Design Census results site, you can also see responses from those that identify as non-binary/third gender or preferred to self-describe. h/t @jessicasvendsen
