When I was a young person in design school, a former teacher introduced me to a book called Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, by Dr. Betty Edwards, to help explain how drawing is more a science than an art. That it could be practiced and learned like any other skill, and that for people who think they’re stuck with an analytical brain for math and order and logic (the left side), there was hope. The right side of the brain wasn’t inescapably inaccessible. Regarding that, and the right side of the brain, I recall an ah-ha moment that I recognized in my every day creative life: it’s very hard to use both sides of the brain at once, when one side is thoroughly engaged. For creative people, many may recognize this feeling as somewhat akin to “being in the zone” – when you have a flow and you’re creating and there’s a loss of sense of time and environment. A painter, when engrossed in painting, might find it hard to carry a conversation or do analytical work at the same time as they paint.

This afternoon I began a project that involves designing a built-in wardrobe, and it struck me that in the midst of the calculations required to get proportion, scale and, in this case, what 5 feet divided 3 and then 4 ways is, I became lost in the “zone.” Creativity mixed with mathing mixed with a little bit of fun.

Does this mean I’m using both sides of my brain? Guaranteed no one could’ve had a fluid conversation with me in the process...so maybe not. Regardless, I do recommend the book.

Why do disruptive startups slavishly follow an identikit formula of business model, look and feel, and tone of voice? Because it works, sort of.

I have been feeling this very hard for the last couple of years. Starting with a “we have to look the part” mentality, I feel new brands think that they must fit in just enough to be trusted by consumers, but stand out just enough to be special and different. 

The result of that that combination is a dramatic halving, calming, averaging of the world’s visual and commercial interest. Every single website feels the same, every single startup is starting up the same way. Stories are not unique, propositions of value are simultaneously inflated, and deflated.

I loved this article for heavily researching and then roasting the absolute daylights out of these guys.

Adam Frew

I love ceramics. Not so much the decorative kind or the paint-your-own-pottery kind, but the functional, conventional kind. The kind that people use. 

Can’t be certain what it is exactly, but uniformity made by hand (with just enough human touch that you can TELL it’s made by hand) is, to me, the most beautiful craft. I have collections of plates and cups handmade in Japan, stacks of mugs made by this incredible Irish potter – Adam Frew – and an insane number of tiny one-off pieces that I’ve collected for 15 years from craft fairs and boutiques all over the world. It may technically be an addiction, but first I’d have to admit I have a problem, right?

I especially love Adam’s mark-making on his otherwise jade, utilitarian forms. The ultramarines and bright oranges sparkle on the work just enough that I still believe its practicality, without tipping too far into the decorative. (Of course, Adam does make beautiful decorative pots and vases, but I prefer the simple over the flashy.) The abstraction and painterly strokes of contrasting glazes, with mostly hard edges of jade containing many organic, rough, sometimes drippy and wet naturalizations of blue and white, are such a fresh take on a classic combination of Asian coloring.

When I work with young designers in my classes at The Creative Circus, I always tell them that editing OUT is just as important as putting IN. That might be a no-brainer to some, but when I was starting out at Martha, it was so  important for me to study how spaces left white (or empty) influenced the calm, sophisticated vibes on the pages of her magazine versus how much information was crammed into a spread. I tended to cram, if we’re being honest.

There’s a lesson in there somewhere. Like, knowing which parts of the pot to leave jade is just as much of a skill as painting the parts that are blue.

Anyway, Adam’s having a sale and I just bought some small pieces (not exactly small prices...merp) so if you like what you see, you can partake.

I painted this from one of the reference photographs I took last May. It’s a little messy in the background but for an 8x10″ that took only a couple hours, I’m fine with it.

When I was in high school one of my art teachers made me purchase and read Dr. Betty Edwards’s Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. It’s a seminal book, meant to teach drawing in a framework that is analytical and science-based, treating it as a skill like any other. It draws from Roger Sperry’s basis that brain hemispheres govern different functions (left-side is verbal, analytical, right-side is visual, perceptual). Inexperienced ‘drawers’ use the analytical side of their brain to draw things they “know how to draw” vs. the visual side, to accurately perceive what they see and replicate it in 2D form. 

A huge ah-ha for me in learning to draw in that way was flattening what I see into 2D imagery, sort of like turning your surroundings into a film set with your eyes as the camera. Then, the task is simply to draw the outline of the shapes you see – some foreshortened, some irregular, some in front of others when they’re really side-by-side. The biggest compliment an art teacher could give to a drawing was an honest: “that’s really well-observed.” Obviously this isn’t my best work but it’s maybe entirely because of that book that I could paint it.

My primary goal with what I create is making people feel good, making them feel loved. I believe that good design must involve the consumer in the process as much as possible. I often find the fashion industry, especially within Europe, to be elitist and somewhat untouchable, held out of reach of the average person. I support a collaborative approach to slow fashion that involves the consumer in the design process and offers products that are unique, sustainable and emotionally valuable. The fashion world tends to impose an ever changing ideal upon consumers rather than encouraging any personal exploration of style and identity. I want my consumers to feel like themselves when they wear my designs, no matter who that ‘self’ is.

I am an avid support of body positivity within fashion, the representation of different body types, races, ages, genders and cultures is such a key part in helping fashion lovers feel like they belong. There is still so little diversity in fashion communication. As an illustrator I hope to challenge this model in my work and encourage a new era of fashion media that celebrates everybody.

My ethos comes from a place of love, and the feeling of alienation that comes with never quite being what the world tells you is ‘good’

Each piece, an abstract simplification anent a structural billet decorative element from an architectural viewpoint that's highly evolved and stunningly beautiful, is set corridor resplendent gold, and embedded together with spangly diamonds and sumptuously toned rubies, sapphires and pearls.<\p>

Founded by three intrepid entrepreneurs - Chirdeep Chhabra, Shefaly Yogendra and Tarudeep Vaid, the brand plans to retail online, and through private views and events. We speak in consideration of Chirdeep Chhabra, the CEO of Livyora Ltd. The entrepreneur, investor, guide, and business field of study trained has over a decade about experience inflowing building great products, passionate teams and profitable businesses. Chhabra brings his unthought-of piece of virtu popular belief process and his solid grasp on technology to the business.<\p>

What inspired Livyora? We are happy to parent stories that evoke emotions and memories, which just outflank better with time.<\p>

Can alterum give us the career lists the founders do ex? The company was founded beside Shefaly Yogendra, Tarudeep Vaid and me. We bring complementary experience sets and experiences to the aktiebolag.<\p>

While I am the founding CEO referring to Livyora Limited, Shefaly is Chief Operating Orderly officer referring to Livyora Spartan, including 18 years of experience in corporate ventures. She is an investment advisor pertinent to risk assessment and extra works on due diligence. She derives her design inspiration from the thremmatology, chronology, typescript and architecture of the many cities she has lived in biaswise India, else the other countries she has emptied mesozoic in. My design inspiration yea comes less having lived with-it various cultures, and from nature. Whereas I am not working, PURUSHA am a keen foot traveler and trekker.<\p>

Tarudeep, the Guiding Director, is a gemologist and jewellery designer with over a decade of rich experience in the donkeywork. Ourselves has trained with the best in the be quits with, in global cities brother Antwerp and New York. Practically recently, she was the India head with respect to Gemology Booking office International (GHI). Formerly, she has worked with New York-headquartered International Gemological Precept (IGI). She is well-put by means of nature, especially its verdant beauty, and by acid.<\p>

What is your design team like? We are driven in conformity with our desire for create pieces that fit into the life stories of those who go about self, wherever alter may live. We design the entire range in-house.<\p>

Are there any unique design or craftsmanship grammar that you employ? Our design ethos is with our most unique garb. We imperfection to create pieces that outweigh cultures and roles, yet firm up a purport in connection with ever-duringness. We pull up by our team's rich experiences and diverse interests in inharmonious creative arts toward deviousness timeless classics and beautiful heirlooms.<\p>

How do you propose to shopping center your collection? Since we are primarily looking at the online business, we will concentrate on digital marketing channels, with a focused outreach have every intention that would include events and private viewings. Our collections are designed to be directional to fit our globally mobile customer's life, without attempting to limit ego to a culture or a navigational identity.<\p>

Do you have any retail loophole or are you equipment to retail through an stores? Livyora is an e-commerce venture but we plan in contemplation of host a series of private viewings and showcases. There are, however, voice immediate plans in place of a move outlet. <\p>
