Xenon Re-Breathing Chamber

The Design Unit has been working closely with Inspiration Healthcare Ltd over the last two years, developing an innovative xenon re-breathing system for babies suffering from asphyxia at birth.

Every year, babies born suffer brain injury caused by a lack of oxygen and or blood supply to the brain at birth. The use of Xenon gas in the babies air supply, combined with cooling is believed to reduce the risk of brain damage. However, the cost of Xenon gas, up to now, has prohibited the adoption of this treatment.  

We were involved in the development of an innovative gas management chamber, which forms the central part of a closedcircuit for the management of oxygen, xenon and CO2. We developed a chamber consisting of four components that entrap a series of filters and valves. There are two main chambers; soda lime is introduced into the upper chamber which absorbs the exhaled CO2. A gas bag is suspended in the lower chamber which is used to manage the introduction of depleted oxygen back into the system. Exhaled xenon is retained on the outside of this bag in the lower chamber. The system re-circulates the xenon gas whilst removing any waste products, allowing the safe and effective delivery of this precious gas without a prohibitive price tag.

The system is currently undergoing clinical trials in the UK.
