Light Peering Through – Design Final
Original Design: In my initial building of the corner room, I attempted to construct the internal walls first, with the thin slit between them to allow light to peer through. To support the light isolation, I built up walls made from index cards and built a roof that spanned across the top of the designs. From the ceiling, I hung the 3 index card pieces with inlet flairs to match the angles in the film. However, based on my wall design, I found that the walls could not support my ceiling, thus causing me to add center supports to hold the structure in place. Additionally, the uneven structure of the ceiling caused a non-uniform distance in the gaps between.
For my revision, I chose to start building from the walls up. I double stacked index cards on the side walls to reinforce the structure to support extra support for the ceiling. From this, I added the index cards along the side to show the ending of the room and the light reflections that came with it. The centerpieces came next, at varying angles to resemble the staging of angles from the changing viewpoint. To provide the lighting, I used an iPhone flashlight through the open back of the structure. The additional support in the side walls allowed me to remove the supports in the middle of the structure thus causing a closer replication of the movie scene.

Final Design Project
Rationale:
For my design, I chose to recreate the Las Vegas pyramid scene shown in Bladerunner 2049. As seen in the screenshot photo, there is a set of pyramids nestled inside each other. So, in my design, I created two 3-D pyramids with no noticeable designations or other features just as in this scene of the movie. The main goal for this project was to capture the scale and unique design of the building. The buildings in the background were added to give a sense of scale to the pyramids. To cast a better shadow on the smaller pyramid, I created a few 5-layered cardboard bases that elevated the larger pyramid. I made this design the way I did because I felt as if this pyramid was one of the only regular, symmetrical shape buildings within the movie. Just in the background alone, not one of the buildings are shaped normally. Rather, they all have some kind of weird twist unlike the perfectly straight, smooth walls of the pyramids. As stated before, the pyramid has no noticeable designations of its purpose. So, it is left up to the imagination to wonder just what was its purpose while in use. In conclusion, my design was meant to recreate a piece unlike the architecture around it, but just like the architecture around it, they are all slowly returning to the dirty which they were risen from seemingly a lifetime ago.
Design Final : Simplistic Grandeur
I chose this scene to create mostly because I like the open wall with the grand background. I like even more how very not grand it looks when put into just basic shapes as I have done. I chose to leave the people out and focus only on the main objects in the room, and despite the magnificence of the room, there is surprisingly little in it. I have tried in my model to show the room’s symmetry, with the columns centered around the table, as well as its simplicity, apparent in the minimal number of structures within it. The cardboard wings to the side are meant to hold up the side walls. The structures outlined in the back are to represent the pyramid and other structures outside the room, with the circle being the sun.

Despina
In the words of Italo Calvino, Despina can be described in two ways: by ship or by camel. Coming in by ship, a sailor sees a hazy coastline wrapping around the shore and the city. A fog sets in as you get closer to the shore but just before you drop anchor, the fog clears. I hear the captain shouting “Land Ho!” As I run outside onto the port side of the ship, I see it, Despina. I see what looks like a giant camel. I see what could be the two humps of the camel, the straps and bags it carries, the fruit dangling from the bags overflowing and dragging to the ground. But wait, now I see, those are the buildings. Oh my, those buildings are so, so, they tower over everything else in the whole city. I see everything now. This city has so much to see, so much to admire. This drawing is to display the ship coming into port. The fog has just cleared and the ship and its crew can finally see the land. They can see the beauty of the city.
Now as the man coming on a camel, he sees the city in a much different way as he comes from the different side of the city. He sees it like an oasis out into the distance, almost as a mirage. “Goodness gracious” he says. “How have I never seen this before? I am so far out from the city, yet it looks so big even from here.” As he gets closer he begins to see the smoke billowing from the tops of the skyscrapers. His imagination begins to take over. He sees a ship, a ship ready to take him away far out into the sea where the water is deep blue and plentiful. He can already feel the breeze coming from the coast. He swears he can hear the horn blow from the ship getting ready to embark from the port. He comes back to reality as he sees closer yet the big beautiful buildings and the large glass panes and he is completely in awe of the serenity. This drawing is to show the vastness of the city. To show how far out the camel-driver still is, yet the city is so huge as it sits just on the edge of the horizon.
This structural design I have made is to reflect the vision of the sailor from the ship. This shows the city of Despina from the coast and to show how vast it is just as the fog clears through the skies. This city reminds me of the modern day Dubai and the many buildings right off the water and how ginormous they are. This vision is what created this structure in my mind. Large buildings right on the shore of the land. A huge towering approach to the city Despina.
