I don't think it's there anymore (I was intentionally waiting for the event to be over to post this so I wouldn't accidentally spoil it for the kids), but several weeks ago I helped the owner of ART247 and another artist decorate a tree across the street for a city wide scavenger hunt in Lockport. I think our tree's theme was imagination/creativity, I wasn't involved in the event's planning so I'm not 100% on that, but I was asked if I could make something big-ish to decorate with using that theme. So I used a bunch of cardboard and paint to create an imagination delivery truck and a flying fish bus. I wasn't able to get back here with the girls as planned this Spring, and the lock was delayed with opening anyway, but now it's Summer, they raised the lock and the canal is open! Here's what the guard lock looks like open,...It is not any prettier,.... Swipe to look back at the place last February, the world really does change with the seasons! ~ This is a guard lock. It's a lock on the canal, but instead of raising and lowering boats, it controls the water levels each season. In the Winter it's down, sort of acting as a dam, not much water going through, and that helps protect all the other locks and equipment in the city from being wrecked by ice over the Winter. I've never seen the thing move, but check out those giant pulleys on top. All the melting snow created a puddle/ditch with enough water to finally take the boat for a test drive! Their giant noggins make the boat a little tippy, but with a doll in the front and the back to counter balance, it seems to work. - Harleen is not super happy about being a "Counter weight" for the captain of the boat, also it's a little rainy out. One more pic of the guard lock, this time with Desi. I went down the bike path with a bag full of dolls and a camera fully expecting some random person to pop up next to me asking questions until I bailed, but nope, didn't come across another soul (a ton of cars in the parking lot, so idk where all those people went). Desi was only tagging along as a backup, but since no one stopped by I wasn't in any rush, which meant she had time to come out and see the lock too. ~ So I know I said I'd take the girls across the street from my Art studio and show you all the historic Erie Canal in Lockport sometime, but I was out skiing along the Pendleton stretch of the canal this past weekend ( farmland and woods about 5 minutes away from the city) , and I remembered there's something sort of neat you might want see out here too. - This is a guard lock.
