If you buy a song for $1 on Bandcamp and the artist gets 80¢, that’s the equivalent payout they’d get for ≈200 streams on Spotify.
One of my top tracks of all time, according to Last.fm, is a song I’ve listened to 298 times.
The artist has earned about $1.19 from these 298 streams over the last few years. Meanwhile, I was paying Spotify hundreds of dollars (💀) to keep my Premium active during those years.
the funniest part about my #deslopification journey (breaking up with Spotify) is I’ve ended up giving more money directly to artists in the last few days than I would have spent on three months of a subscription.
Because half the stuff I’m trying to Acquire is on Bandcamp for $1 anyways and I’m like. Sure why not.
So I’ve been showing my partner all the Saw movies via their family’s Disney+ account. Yes we love being leeches. We got up to Saw V about two weeks ago.
I go to pull up Saw VI last night and… it’s no longer streamable on Disney+!! Just an option to purchase it. Hmm that’s weird maybe it’s just because it’s a newer installment?
Nopeeee every single Saw film is now unavailable to stream on any of Roku’s streaming options, you can now only purchase them. On paid streaming services you already need to subscribe to. 💀 what a joke
Anyways I’m really glad I started this #deslopification journey because I Acquired every saw film from Saw 2004 to Jigsaw. So we have a backup plan.
But it’s crazy how the platforms you’re paying for can just switch up what’s available to watch, without even a courtesy “Leaving Soon” warning like you get on Netflix.
It really makes me wonder if they change what’s available for each account based on their viewing habits.
Like if their algorithm saw we watched up to the fifth film and then decided to trap us into having to pay to see the rest of them. I wouldn’t be shocked if that was the truth.
2026 will be the year I transition completely back to owning every piece of media I like. Not just DVDs but like, digital files. MP3s up to my nose. Thousands of songs I won’t have to pay a monthly subscription to listen to. Movies I can watch with NO ADS OR WIFI REQUIRED. I don’t even caaaareeeee if there’s the name of a dead website in the corner the whole time. It’s my movie now.
My autistic friends 15 years ago who kept all their favorite movies and games on giant hard drives were 100% correct about the future.
I’m ready to be freed from all this nonsense. I’m ready to go back to OWNING things.
Like why tf am I paying REPEATEDLY, hundreds of dollars over the last few years, for the privilege of TEMPORARILY enjoying everything I love and still getting served ADS!? It’s just disrespectful at this point.
While visiting family for the holidays I explored my storage unit and found my old iPod touch and an old phone with a headphone jack. Both fantastic contenders.
I got the old phone charged up, it has 128 gigs entirely free. Updated the software. But for some reason it won’t download any apps. Even the apps that say they are definitely compatible with it. (I was trying to download the VLC media player so as to avoid needing a laptop for file organization) So 😩 idfk.
Next hope is the iPod but that one will almost definitely require me to buy a laptop 💀 to load and organize files. If it even has decent memory space. I ordered a charging cable for it (the old 30 pin wide iPod charger). Let’s see if it even turns on….
I think it’s pretty much coming down to having to buy a laptop in the end no matter what. Somehow, between bills.
A year ago I bought a $40 Chromebook off Amazon once and I’d say it’s probably worth about $5.
Yeah just a heads up for anyone who ever wants a laptop for anything beyond answering emails…. Don’t buy a Chromebook. Just don’t.
I gotta find something cheap but somehow not dogshit.
