rove’s fingers are rough against the stone, slightly humid from the sun.

the weather is summery, maybe a summer that just bled in with the spring. not too hot. but even as he thinks this, he knows that there should be— the buzz of cicadas, in the background. a monarch, or tiger butterfly, or two of each. dragonflies, maybe, if the summer is instead aimed a bit closer to autumn.

there is nothing but silence. it’s as if someone with infinite power snapped all the insects out of range, out of every possible place except for his mind. he knows that there should be the weight of them outside. their humming, their buzzing, their chattering. he would take mosquitos and ticks, maybe, at this point. some kind of normalcy to it all.

once again, he is reminded of those ants on stilts. of those disoriented, off balance pedometers.

or; rove can hear the ticking of a deathwatch beetle, and feel the hatching of a hawk-wasp's egg— the larvae inside ready to eat him alive.
