Well the idea was to make the story resonate with the now. Back then Jazz was considered taboo and was a frowned upon genre. Nowadays, the genres you listed are those taboo genres in an effort to bring with you the same ideas of that time.
Well that's a stupid idea.
Not you, you're probably right (even though I don't really consider dance and dubstep to be 'taboo'... even rap as much as what... 10 years ago?). Just the idea that the filmmakers think that to resonate with now they have to put anachronistic music in.
Like damn, the story is about a bunch of obnoxious people who think they're above the law and are so full of their obsessions with themselves and each other that people get killed. Not even in crimes of passion (except maybe Gatsby) just idiocy.
Are you really telling me that audiences today are so stupid that they can't see the problem there without blaring electro music over a scene from the twenties?????
The whole point of the book was to show Americans how stupid the Jazz Age really was. And how stupid the people wrapped up in it were. And they try and make a film about it without touching Jazz? That's just stupid.
Yes the music makes it fast paced and overwhelming, but is it impossible to do that with music from the time? No.
Goddammit, its like putting Adam West Era "POW" effects on the Dark Night. It just doesn't fit. And it insults the audience.
If they wanted something modern, make a modern movie, not a book from the Jazz Age set in the Jazz Age about the Jazz Age.

One time I went to see Marina & the Diamonds perform, and I met her after the show and she was sweating profusely but she smelled like heaven and I've been jealous of her ever since.
