"They can't do that" used to be a response in the 1950's and 1960's.
As a boomer I was never aware of anything corrupt in the government.
Of course this was in the UK, where I was aware of the "old school tie" guys, and that strings are pulled at higher class levels than mine, but I had a trust that, at the very least to protect their own control, they would not be so foolish as tip the boat too far, and sink themselves.
So I grew up like just about all boomers, with complete trust in those who have obtained the votes of the people, whether they were supporters of capitalist businesses, or supporters of looking after the working class, that they would all be negotiating in good faith, and that my own class level of blue collar tradesman would see progress during my lifetime.
And it did for quite a few years.
But then I get confused because I moved to North America, specifically Canada, so I lost touch with the situation in the UK.
But I believe that if what is happening in the USA were happening in the UK that I knew, there would be national strike action being taken, starting with what they called "One day token strikes".
But this is not likely to occur in North America because of the way that employment contracts bind the workers from taking action, for instance, by striking in support of other striking or disadvantaged workers.
It's a different culture.
And I have no doubt that in the UK too, things are not as good now as they were during my working experience there.
But it seems that in the USA, the equivalent of the upper classes, the rich, are too stupid to maintain their position of control, but have abused their power, which is held by easily gained wealth, by being greedy, and creating a working class that are effectively poorly paid slaves.
When children are in a group and go quiet, a parent is aware that the chance of the kids being up to no good has increased.
Likewise with the GOP Senators.
They are up to no good. And they are greedy enough to have the stupidity to destroy their own privileged position.
If they win in the short term, the Republican party will end up disappearing, because the simple math is that the working class do the actual work that gives corporate shareholders their profits, and if they don't have enough to even exist at poverty levels, then they will be unable to continue to work, because they will be dead or will have moved away from the workplace locality.
It's simple greed driven stupidity that might well end in the equivalent of a peasants revolt that will end capitalism and drive the population into some other form of government and production than the one that has given Americans the lifestyle that they have experienced for over a century.
And because America is still the economic engine of the free world, the allies and the poorer countries will be the worse for the current actions of fools like Mitch McConnell, and Bill Barr, and of course the GOP Senators.
Anyway that's my opinion.
