“B-brandon,” she whimpered, wiping her eyes. Noelle laid across her couch, clutching onto an empty bottle of wine, holding onto her stomach. She rubbed it, feeling guilty and sorry, hoping somehow that her touch could translate an apology, that her touch would explain her feeling of worthlessness and how she wished she could take back the drinking. “I did a bad thing.” Wiping at the tears, she took a deep breath, trying to figure out what to say over the phone. He didn’t know. He didn’t know anything, and even a bottle of wine in, Noelle knew that dropping this bombshell without being in person was a stupid idea. What would she even say? How would she begin? Smoothing out her palm, rubbing her tummy, her lips quivered as she whimpered. “I did a really bad thing.”

He shuffles back and forth awkwardly, nerves bubbling up from his stomach as he fingers the stiff cardstock in his hands, idly playing with it as he considers how to give the gift to Brandon. Two tickets to Surrey, one for Brandon and one for Kayla, since he knows Brandon's been missing his family for months now. He also knows about the circles under his eyes that have only been getting darker and the way his movements are always jerky and frenzied now, rather than just when he drinks coffee or stays up too late. And Brandon's been withdrawing from everybody, not just Hunter, so nobody can help like he knows Brandon needs.

So Hunter settles for the only option left to him, as a concerned friend: he pulls strings with his dad to get the last minute holiday first class flight tickets. He hopes it's enough to at least make him smile again, after how long he's been looking stressed and miserable from school and the situation with Grace. Hesitating at the door, he raises a hand to knock, only to stop short of actually knocking and let out a sigh. See, the thing is- he's not very good with big things like this. Except expensive plane tickets as Christmas gifts were offically one if those 'Big Deal' things between friends, and he didn't want to make it a big deal. 

He doesn't want Brandon to feel pressured or obligated to pay him back, but knowing Brandon, it's bound to happen if he just gives him the tickets. Shaking his head, he's turning back to just knock and get it over with when the door opens and Brandon comes out anyways. Instantly, his mouth goes dry at the sight of him, his lips opening and closing in surprise before he manages to find his voice, clearing his throat quickly. “Busted.” He's proud of himself for staying so nonchalant and even managing a laugh, even when his heart is beginning to pound faster until Hunter's sure Brandon could hear it. 

“Uh, I was debating between giving these to Kayla to open or leaving them on your door and running.” He confesses, a sigh escaping his lungs like smoke, a small smile quirking up the corner of his lips. “Here, man. Merry Christmas.” He says earnestly, the words sounding more like a declaration than a sentiment, as he holds out the envelope with the tickets inside. “Don't worry about paying me back, or getting me something; I don't need it, but I know you've been wanting to go home. Okay? So just take them. There's one for you and Kayla, so just- Just get out of here, yeah? Take a break and do what you need to, and I'll be here when you get back. Alright?” He asks, slapping the envelope into his hands, giving him a questioning look before nodding. “Alright then. I'll see you after the break.” His unsaid 'I love you’ hangs in the air, bitter under his tongue when he swallows it down with a smile instead of setting it free like he wants to. He nods again, clapping a hand on Brandon's shoulder before turning and leaving before he ruins it.
