Im about to really get into it about the Detco remaster
So it may just be me being autistic but I do not like it. And i havent found anyone else that seems to agree with me. Now do not get me wrong. Im happy a remaster came out. I want Detective Conan to reach more audiences and having dubs and newer versions of older episodes makes it easier for people to get into it and see it. It makes it more accessible. So I have no issues with the fact that it exists. Im just not a fan of how they went about it. However, even though I dont like it, I am glad we have it. Now lets get into it.
The voices are okay but I definitely prefer the older ones.
The script is the main issue I have. Especially what they did with Megure taking away his euphemisms and Agasa's German accent. We're not even gonna talk about the horrific way they try to pronounce the Japanese names. . . I love that they didnt englisize it. Cause while im used to their English names and their Japanese names. Their actual names ARE the Japanese ones. So its nice that theyre using them in the dub. I know it was more common back when the first episode came out to use English names so it was "easier". But everytime I heard them say the name "Shinichi" I felt like I was physically recoiling. You would think they'd know how to properly pronounce the names before putting it out considering its a whole ass company doing this and not a fan dub or something.
They clearly cleaned up the animation, but some things are way too saturated and shinichi's skin is too red. Its very obvious when hes next to Ran, i do like that they made sure to keep their proper skin tones because everyone does have a different skin tone but for some reason Shinichi was practically glowing pinkish red. I know this is personal preference and its nice and good to have it all cleaned up. Though I prefer the older art style now as ive been a fan for so long. When I first started I wasnt big on the beginning art style but I like it a lot now. But the saturated colors are done way too brightly. And that isnt really a personal opinion thats just fact to me. They're the wrong shades of what they were before and it bothers me. Usually its fine if its not exact but this is blaringly different.
Conan you can tell is voiced by a girl which in the original i never did until I looked it up. He sounded more like a kid and he sounded really natural and it fit in well. His voice doesnt match his body and they made Megure sound way too formal
It feels like they took the personality out of it!!
Megure has always had that old timey detective vibe and his euphemism reflect that and his voice is gruffer
"theres [name] and [name], friends of the stiff"
". . . then we got mr. no-head sweetheart here"
". . . with guests dressed pretty. but you got a guy who went cold turkey on your plush carpet"
Agasa I just personally like the german accent but even then he sounded more natural. Though I will admit it was a bit hard to understand him at times it really leaned in to that eccentric scientist role to me.
A lot of them sound really formal and less fluid and natural sounding. It kind of takes me out of it
And they even took out lines that were in it
I just watched the first two episodes of the remaster and did you notice they took out "i was going to take my life too with my mothers pills" from the girl who killed her ex in episode 1? I feel like thats kind of important
Some of the way Shinichi and Ran say things make it so the message comes across a different way too that isnt right. One that really bothered me was
(new line) "wouldnt you rather just pick a favorite?" vs. (old line) "wouldnt you rather have one real girlfriend?"
I just think its really odd to use the word "favorite" in that context. And of course thats not the only times that they changed the words that made it come across differently but its the one that I keep thinking about.
Also rip to the line "Sure ill just throw him out the window in the middle of the high way"
Ran: "Jimmy's a good detective"
Kogoro: "you used to say that about me"
Kogoro: "SURE. ABANDON ME"
^ all taken out
Im sorry I think its the script that bothers me the most. Ive watched it so much that the lines play through my head when I watched it and when they didnt mean the same thing or had missing information it just really irked me.
The voices are mainly fine like im sure ill get used to them eventually.
Ayumi sounds perfect and Genta and Mitsuhiko dont sound bad either. If not for how formal Megure sounds I like his too
But i also noticed that they specifically pointed things out to the audience in the script more. Instead of having Conan go through his thought process and showing us the clues and such, they actually spelled it out for us by having him think it. It feels kind of sanitized in that way. Like they're holding our hand guiding us through it.
very happy that silly censorship is still there however for the first episode lmao.
Anyway thats all for now. Im sure ill definitely have more to say cause I could talk about Detective Conan for hours on end. But these are my initial thoughts. And again, while im not a fan of the remaster. I am glad it exists and I hope it brings a new influx of fans. Detective Conan is something very near and dear to my heart
