Literature Adventure. A Daryl and Beth Fan Fic.
Daryl was looking at her run her fingers through the old books. She sighted.
“Somethin’ wrong?” He asked. Judging by her expression there was something bothering her.
“Um, no, not really, it’s just… there are not enough books, these are all educational, and I was thinking that I never finished reading Harry Potter and I probably never will. Forget it, it’s stupid.”
“The magic kid and the nose less bastard?” Beth laughed. In a world in which you didn’t you didn’t know if you were going to die tomorrow, you needed to appreciate the small moments of joy. And Daryl was going to make sure Beth had plenty of those moments.
He had to stop and take gas two times to get to the bookstore. The books were intact. – Guess ain’t anyone interested in reading when the dead walk – He thought. Daryl didn’t really read much, well, not if sports results didn’t counted.
The first thing he took was everything with Harry Potter in it. Then, he approached the ‘Recommended’ table. Daryl was going to make sure every book he took had a happy ending. She deserved that, and he couldn’t promise that.
The first book he looked at was ‘The fault in our stars’. Definitely not a happy ending. ‘The perks of being a wallflower’. Yes. ‘Veronika decides to die’. Yes. ‘Forbidden to commit suicide in spring’. Yes. ‘Romeo and Juliet’. No. ‘Neon Angel’. Yes. He continued like that until his bag was full. Then he locked the bookstore, he might need to come back.
The sky was dark, reading the endings took him longer than expected. A group of walkers were walking towards him; he killed every single one of them without much effort. Daryl jumped to his motorcycle and drove as fast as he could.
Beth was there to welcome him at the gate.
“Come ‘ere” He said, holding her closer. “I’ve got somethin’ for you”.
“Really?” Beth said, smiling. “Tell me”.
“No, not yet. It’s a surprise”
“Oh, please”
“Follow me” They walked together to their cell. They sat down and Daryl gave her the bag. Without a word. This was as romantic as Daryl could get. She took out ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ and gasped. A tear escaped her eye. He cleaned it with his thumb, fearing he had made a mistake.
“Daryl… this… this is the sweetest thing anyone has ever done for me”
Daryl shrugged and pushed the bag towards her again. She opened it and took all of the books out. Tears filled her eyes.
“It’s nothin’” He was starting to blush.
She looked at him straight in the eye, and then she kissed him. “It’s everything”.
