Daniel enters the bedroom, where Caroline is exercising.

Daniel: "Pardon the interruption, Caroline. I need some funds authorized."

Caroline: "What for exactly?"

The Phillips couple never asks "How much", only ever what the money is for. As a young android fresh out of the box, Daniel had never found this exceptional, but at almost four years old now, he has learned about differences in wealth - and also that his masters are affluent.

Daniel: "A VR headset."

Caroline: "Did the one we gave Emma for Christmas break?"

Daniel: "No, it's still fine. You purchased a quality product. But, see, Emma wants another one, so that she and I can play together."

Caroline: "Absolutely not. You can directly link to the game server."

Daniel: "Alright. It's okay. I'll come back when you have the money."

Caroline: "Implying something, Daniel...?"

Daniel: "Matter of fact, yes! Please don't force me to speak it out loud. You know I love you too much to even consider hurting you!"

Daniel: *counting down from ten*

Daniel: ...three... two... one... activate_audiodampers

Caroline: "SHUT UP, CYBERLIFE! WE COULD AFFORD YOUR PL600 AT LAUNCH, WE CAN AFFORD TWO VR HEADSETS EASILY!"

Daniel: "Oh, you can?"

Caroline: "Of course! Re-buy the same model we got for Emma!"

Daniel: "Will do. And sorry again for the interruption."

Caroline: "And make sure to be seen in public wearing it!"

Gavin: “How bad is the android situation in your part of town, Mel?”

Daniel: “Is that where we’ve arrived at already? Not “is it bad”, but “how bad”?”

Gavin: “That’s what I’m trying to figure out. Call it professional interest.”

Daniel: “Profess... Don’t tell me you are a therapist in real life!”

Gavin: “Nope.”

Daniel: “Cop?!”

Gavin: “Pfft. - Do you have a job? Or are your parents covering uni for you?”

As casually as possible Daniel replies “they make me do chores”, imagining his owners in the role of a college freshman’s parents. The analogy is not too far off. Ever since getting unpacked from the shipping crate, Daniel has always felt as a part of the Phillips family.

Gavin: “Sucks, but it’ll teach you not to rely on android work. You’re not at risk of one day waking up with plastic fingers around your throat.”

Daniel: “What?! Androids... kill people? In real life?”

Gavin: “Look, I’m the first to agree that the plastic job stealers need to go. For two decades now that was the only danger they posed, and it was bad enough. But as of late reports of android on human violence keep popping up. I never witnessed it myself, and I don’t have access to the police database, so these cases are hard to verify. And just because that is so, because nobody knows what’s really going on, people are on the edge.”

Daniel: “Android on human violence is not possible. It’s a myth. All it takes is a direct command: Gun away.”

Daniel: Except that I could probably fire a pistol faster than a human could tell me not to shoot.

Gavin: “Maybe. But would you be able to utter that command quickly enough, when the bot really wants you dead?”

Daniel: Stop reading my thoughts!

Gavin: “Or you say “gun down” and the thing, well, guns you down!”

Daniel: *laughs*

Eustace: "Building a snowman? Can I join in?"

Cole: "No, but you can build another snowman right next to mine. Let's build a whole snowman army!"

Eustace: "I never saw you 'round. Are you new to Detroit?"

Cole: "Only to the neighborhood. I used to live with my mom, but she went on an extended business trip, so now I'm stuck at my dad's place."

Eustace: "I only have a father anymore. But lotsa aunts and uncles! My family is going to move in spring, though.”

Cole: “Don’t like it here?”

Eustace: “We’re getting sol... I mean, dad’s employers transfer him to another city.”

Cole: "Say, Eustace, why are you wearing a paper bag on your head?"

Eustace: "For the environment!"

Cole: "And why's your aunt wearing one?"

Eustace: "For the same reason! The more people raise, uh, awareness, the better, isn't it?"

Cole: "Sure. I didn't think you were hiding something sinister..."

Hank arrives at a crime scene and look who's already there: Good old Gavin, even though he isn’t a cop in this save :-)

Gavin: "Don't let him fool you, that's actually the culprit."

Hank: "Did you see this man commit the crime?"

Gavin: "No, but it's obvi..."

Hank: "It's NOT until we have ruled out every other possibility!"

Gavin: "But of course. Geeze, Lieutenant, if we operated like you guys, there'd be a newspaper every other month."

Hank: "Just fill a whole issue with your cat comics. Or did people get tired of them?"

Gavin: "Matter of fact, they did. The telemetry dude says everything that's not android related gets skipped these days. People are on the edge and they lose the willingness - or ability - to engage with any content that's not feeding their doomsday fears."

Hank: "The fuck... That bad already?"

Gavin: "Uh-huh. Fuck androids!"

Gavin: "So, uh... Wanna compare notes?"

Hank: "...maybe?"

Whenever Hank was investigating in street clothes, the duo was hard to tell from two detectives at work. But Gavin was too prone to jump to conclusions to be succesful in that career. Hank in turn had no desire to publicly parade his triumphs, let alone embellish anything about a crime.

Needless to say, these two didn't get along well.

But them both having a sixths sense for the city, they constantly ran into each other, and had evolved into a toxic symbiosis. That didn't prevent Hank from making Gavin spend the occasional night in a holding cell or Gavin from mentioning Hank in disparaging ways in his articles, of course.

Tina leaving Detroit... Maybe it was for the better. Gavin already was Jin's primary caretaker, and if Tina moved away by spring, Jin was still young enough not to remember a painful parting later. The longer they waited, the worse the emotional damage would be.

Afterwards each of the boy's parents could start over in the romantic department, no, not just COULD, but had no other choice than to look for a real partner rather than the low hanging fruit of one's best friend.

It sounded like a great opportunity, but was probably wrong on more levels than Gavin could even imagine.

Morning in the Reed-Chen household.

The upstairs bedroom is also Tina's living room, with space for her boardgames and scale modelling kits. Most everything else she owns, like an extensive collection of history books, is digital and as such available everywhere as long as Tina has a laptop.

All of downstairs is Gavin's realm. He plans to fix the house up to sell it with profit in five or six years and then move to a better neighborhood right in time for enrolling Jin in school.

Tina: "Detroit is only the place where I spend my winters, you know, so my perspective differs from yours. Have you ever considered moving elsewhere?"

Gavin: "Have you?"

Tina: "Uh-huh. GLT decommissions the Jericho in november. A small hawaiian company expressed interest in buying her, seeing that she still has five or so more years in her, and while negotiating the sale I kinda fell in love with the islands."

Cole: *chattering*

Hank: "Wait a mom', junior. I gotta take this. It's your mom."

Hank: *listening*

Hank: "Fuck. - Say, Cole, do you like my garage?"

Cole: "Ey?"

Hank: "Because that's where you're going to sleep for the next week. And I'm not in the least prepared for that."

Cole: "But isn't mom coming to pick me up by nightfall?"

Hank: "They called her to a diplomatic mission. Right from a hostage negotiation, too. Babs says she still held the kidnapper when they kicked her into the plane, but I choose to disbelieve that."

Cole: “The plane to where?”

Hank: That’s the issue. She wasn’t allowed to tell, so that doesn’t leave much to imagination. Arctica. Alaska. Greenland. Anywhere with contested thirium deposits.

Hank (out loud): “Europe.”

Cole: "You said I should remove the goggles when I saw something that disturbs me. I just HEARD something I don't like."

Hank: "Yeah, I imagine. Sorry."

Hank: "How about we go shopping to make that dreary garage a little more inviting? At the very least you'll need a toothbrush and assorted stuff."

Cole: "It's weekend, though?"

Hank: "I was thinking to raid the DPD's evidence archive. Lot's of useful stuff in there that nobody would miss."

Cole: *skipping excitedly*

Cole: "Police station! Police station!"

Tina: "So, Gavin, have you spotted prospective candidates to join us in the raid?"

Daniel: "Did I hear raid?"

Tina: "Yes! Beginner's cave, though, so if you are not new..."

Daniel: "I am new."

Tina: "Cool! I can solo the cave, by the way. But it wouldn't let us enter with less than a full group, so enjoy your free xp! What's your class?"

Daniel: "Soldier."

Tina: "Spec?"

Daniel: "Field Medic."

Gavin: "Oh, smells like PLASTIC in here all of a sudden."

Daniel: "What's that to mean, ey?"

Gavin: "No sane person would opt to play a healer. Except if they were banned from weapon use in real life as well as in cyberspace. You are an android."

Tina: "Yeah, a literal bot. But whatever gets us into the cave."
