Lyra’s impulse was to lie and she felt tempted to do it because she didn’t want to worry him. However, she could feel in her stomach that she was getting quite a bit hungry. And it wasn’t an unpleasant feeling to have someone be concerned enough about her that they wanted to make sure she’d eaten something.

“A little, earlier, but not much.” Lyra opted for the honest answer: she’d snacked a bit on some of what she had in her bag but she knew that wasn’t exactly substantial.

 it's easier to be alone,      or at least that's what she tells herself,    it's what she's told herself over and over for pretty much all of her life.    what else is there to do?   maybe there had been a point - early on when she was still little    &&   wide eyed    -    where had someone actually held her and told her she was loved and wanted...    maybe she would have been capable of believing it.    (   she knows better.     bobby taught her better,    recent events have taught her better.   )    there were only ever a few families where she'd ever passingly almost believed maybe they'd keep her.

 but a lost little girl was never going to be enough to fix a family,    was it?
