❝ Whose BLOOD is that ? ❞
Harold’s voice CARRIED across the room ( John’s their ? loft ), a carefully stifled panic attempting to boil toward the surface—–The Machine had entered & he received the answer without her needing to speak a word. A large, red GASH tarnished her left upper arm & with it, came a considerable amount of blood. It stained the torn pieces of what was left of The Machine’s sleeve & slowly flowed over the hand she’d pressed there. He was ACROSS the room within a few seconds ( stubbornly IGNORING a healing wound’s & damaged nerves’ outcry over how quickly he’d moved ) &, whilst gently pressing his left hand against her upper back, Harold lead her into the dining room. ❛ Come on,❜ He’d urged her, a QUIET assurance.
This was the FIRST time she’d truly been injured by another’s hand, the first time within a human body. A light tremor continuously passed throughout her limbs ; he could FEEL it as he eased her down into a chair. Harold was gone from the room for only a moment, having gone into the bathroom to retrieve the first-aid kit & to wash his hands. Once he returned, he stiffly settled into the chair next to her, opening the box & placing it on the table shortly after.
The Machine’s quiet murmur passed between them after a moment, the sound somewhat TAINTED with strangled pain. He was already tearing the rest of the fabric, removing it from the wound, but he PAUSED then, & blue eyes LIFTED to meet her luminescent ones. Dark brows tensed with an affectionate melancholy.
❝ What’re you APOLOGIZING for ?—–this is gonna hurt, ❞
A pained SMILE tugged at her lips & instead of answering the QUESTION right away, she simply Watched ( as she did BEST ) as Harold began to tightly wrap the large cut with freshly-cleaned towels, to stop the bleeding. As he’d warned her ( & as she’d predicted herself, 100% ), the PRESSURE elicited a sharp sting at first, which eased into a deep & dull ache. They waited. The SILENCE lasted several minutes, but for The Machine, it felt like … an infinity.
❛ I … can’t seem to prevent very many MISTAKES, this way. In this body. It is … difficult. ❜
Harold glanced upward again, thin lips parted & something within his expression softened.
❝ I’m afraid that’s the COST of being human. ❞
The Machine had predicted his words before he’d said them ( PREDICTION: 96.80% ), but it was no less comforting to hear, ESPECIALLY as it was accompanied by a quick upward curve of mouth, from Harold. Now removing the pressure, she watched him clean the wound with lightly warmed water & soap, to clean away all of the BLOOD. Like she’d seen him do with PRIMARY ASSET, ANALOG INTERFACE, so many times before … she never could have predicted that she’d someday be on the receiving end herself.
The ointment was next—–again, she predicted his gentle warning of the sting, thus she was PREPARED for it, albeit that didn’t stop the grimace. Thankfully, it hadn’t lasted long & The Machine allowed a soft breath of a sigh once the discomfort eased. FINALLY, Harold was bandaging her upper arm, carefully … before he’d even finished, her voice lifted quietly between them,
It was still … a bit of a SHOCK to hear her call him that, with her own unique voice, with her own facial expression to follow. An affectionate warmth unfurled within Harold’s chest—–he was certain that he’d likely NEVER get completely used to it … but he nevertheless ENJOYED having her here, like this. While he hadn’t been able to keep his PROMISE the first time ( i promised I’d never hurt you again ) … they now had a second chance & this time, Harold Finch intended to KEEP it.
