Adam Wiseman - Moving Portraits

Moving Portraits is a series of approximately one minute filmed portraits that capture a moment of un-guarded introspection.

Interested in how modern technology can change the vocabulary of traditional documentary photography, Wiseman uses a combination of documentary portraiture techniques and available technological advances in high quality video to take “filmed portraits” of his subjects. Paradoxically, in the interest of capturing an honest moment, Wiseman lets the subject believe that he or she is having their picture taken when in-fact they are being filmed. The portraits are then edited and only include sections from a one-minute period where the photographer leaves and the subject is alone. Once the filmed part is completed Wiseman tells the subject what he has done and proceeds to create a traditional portrait where subject and photographer collaborate.

The result is a series of subtle yet intense moments, the viewer is immediately engaged. Appealing to the voyeur in all of us we stare but also feel uncomfortable when we realize we are there, with the subject, within their intimate space.

Born in Mexico City in 1970, Wiseman has lived in Mexico, NY, Scotland and Brazil. He has a BA from NYU in Ethnographic Film (1992) and completed the Documentary Program at the International Center of Photography in NY (1996). After leaving ICP he worked as a fine printer at Magnum NY for 2 years. In 2012 he recieved Mexico's prestigious Endowment for the Arts Fellowship SNCA/FONCA.His most recent solo show called “Area Conurbada” was exhibited from May-August 2012 at the Museo Archivo de la Fotografia in Mexico city. In April of 2013 his "Factory Walls" series was featured at both the Paris Photo and Zona Maco Contemporary art fairs. Wiseman currently works as an independent fine art and documentary photographer in Mexico City and is represented by the Patricia Conde Gallery.

The Paris Film by Anja Hitzenberger & Edward Ratliff was shown as part of the DEVELOP Photo line-up for the first edition of the On Photography Online Film Festival, 9/29/13. The Festival was part of the FOTOWEEK in Holland, an initiative of FOAM and the Netherlands Photo Museum, and was organized by Barbera Brakel of Photo Affairs. 

“The Paris Film” is a visual short story inspired by the work of Argentine writer Julio Cortázar. A woman staying in a friend’s apartment in Paris has a weekly routine: every Tuesday she goes to a photobooth and takes a picture of herself. But then strange things start to happen.
