Eugene Richards is a photographer, writer, and documentary filmmaker who has authored seventeen books, the most recent being "The Run-On of Time" (Nelson-Atkins Museum, 2017), a career retrospective in association with the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the George Eastman museum, and "the day I was born" (Many Voices Press, 2020), the story of six men and women who are living in the memory-laden Mississippi Delta of Arkansas. Among numerous honors, Richards has been the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, the W. Eugene Smith Memorial Award, and the Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award for coverage of the disadvantaged.

About the photo book: THIS IS A STORY ABOUT TWO FRIENDS — a photographer and a writer in Portland, Maine, who tried an experiment. At the start of every week for 52 weeks Winky sent Susan a photograph, and by the end of that week Susan sent a tiny story back — a moment in time that talked to the photograph. The photographs were of their children, and the street where they all lived (only one house separated their two families), and of other green places in Maine.

The mothers saw each other sometimes dozens of times a day — exchanging kids and dogs and emergency cups of coffee, but they never spoke about their experiment. There wasn’t time. Their lives often felt like they were spinning just ever so slightly out of control — like maybe motherhood was just one big race with no visible finish line.

But what happened while they weren’t looking was that their experiment began to slow time down. All the little marriages of words and image said, Stop Here. Because motherhood flies by. The days are long, but the weeks are short. We know we’re marking time with our kids, but how exactly? And how is it that the changes in those little bodies are so invisible, even when they’re happening before our very eyes?

Stop Here, This is the Place tells the story of a year in motherland. The camera watches the children’s arms and legs grow longer until any trace of baby in their faces is gone. The camera reports how long one year can feel in the life of a ten-year-old. Children look ahead. But mothers. We can always go back and remember.

Call for Photography Films

Call for films for the 2015 On Photography Film Festival in September, during the Dutch Week of Photography, initiated by FOAM and The Netherlands Fotomuseum. The selected films exhibit the diversity of photography and its practitioners, raise questions and provoke discussion of educational value. Deadline 6/14/15 Screenings will be held in a cinema adjacent to the Amsterdam's Unseen Photo Fair. For 24 hours on Sunday, the festival will make 2-3 hours of films on photography available online for free. The festival is curated by Barbera Brakel and Erica McDonald.  You can see programming from last year’s fest here.

Born in the UK but of Welsh descent, David Hurn is a self-taught photographer who began his career in 1955 as an assistant at the Reflex Agency. While a freelance photographer, he gained his reputation with his reportage of the 1956 Hungarian revolution.

On 23 October 1956, what began as a mass rally in Budapest quickly evolved into the Hungarian Revolution. Within days, millions of Hungarians were supporting the revolt. It lasted until 4 November, when it was crushed by the Hungarian Security Police and Soviet tanks and artillery. Thousands of Hungarian revolutionaries and Soviets were killed and injured, and nearly a quater of a million people fled the country as refugees.

Hurn eventually turned away from coverage of current affairs, preferring to take a more personal approach to photography. He became an associate member of Magnum in 1965 and a full member in 1967. In 1973 he set up the famous School of Documentary Photography in Newport, Wales, and has been in demand throughout the world to teach workshops.

The Return of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s Decisive Moment

Within the canon of European photography books it would be difficult to find one more famous, revered and influential as Henri Cartier-Bresson’s Images a la Sauvette or, as the American edition is titled, The Decisive Moment. Upon its release in French and American editions in 1952, Cartier-Bresson received personal letters affirming its brilliance from the likes of Jean Cocteau, Alexey Brodovitch, Carmel Snow (then editor of Harper’s Bazaar), and Joan Miro. The French edition publisher Stratis Eleftheriadis (known simply as Tériade) claimed it was “one of the most satisfying books that [he] had had the pleasure of making.” Its value as an out-of-print collectable has risen over the past few decades resulting in keeping this masterpiece out of the hands of many younger photographers. 2014 On Photography Film Festival

In recent years, many inspiring documentaries on photography have been made; this film festival focuses exclusively on this underexposed genre. The first OP-Festival in 2013 enjoyed a tremendous success and reached viewers in 79 countries. The 2014 On Photography Film Festival will run from September 19th to 21st, as part of the Dutch Week of Photography, initiated by FOAM and The Netherlands Fotomuseum. Screenings will be held at Amsterdam's Unseen Photo Fair, The Bredaphoto International Photo Festival and pop-up screenings will take place all over the globe. On Photography will air for three days and each day the online festival will screen films and videos for 24 hours and make them watchable for free on the official festival website: http://www.opfestival.nl

The selected films exhibit the diversity of photography and its practitioners, raise questions and provoke discussion of educational value. The viewers will be challenged to become aware of their visual environment and develop a sharp eye. Five winners were chosen out of nearly one hundred applicants. The pictures were never used, but I developed the negatives anyway (without proofing them). Michael Jang is an established photographer who has always had an eye for recognizing and capturing the defining moments of his generation. Well known for his commercial photography and portraiture of notable figures from the 70s and 80s, such as William Burroughs, Alice Walker, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Sinatra and many others, Jang’s work is recently resurfacing in a new light. The SF MOMA has recently acquired several of his early prints from the series “The Jangs”, in which he tells the story of his Asian family trying to assimilate into the suburban American mainstream of the ‘70s. Although he has been described as a social realist, or influenced by Robert Frank, Jang admits that he isn’t always thinking about documenting the historical significance of his subjects while he is shooting. It is only after the passing of time that he is able to look back at his photographs from the 70s and 80s and see their humor and significance within their social and historical context. Consciously or not, Jang has an uncanny intuition for recognizing, and capturing particular everyday moments that will go on to become artful allegories of a particular point in time. The fact that his photos are taken unassumingly, and are not tainted by the ego or bias of an artist with a grandiose agenda, allows images to speak for themselves with the candid truthfulness, accuracy, and vivacity that is characteristic of his work.

On the DEVELOP Tube Photography Video Channel: Noted art critic and historian Hans den Hartog Jager interview Dutch photographer Rineke Dijkstra, known for her remarkable oeuvre of large-scale portraits, which were featured in a retrospective at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum last year. The artist discusses the relationship of contemporary photography and her own work to paintings by such artists as Rembrandt and Vermeer.
