Excerpt from ‘Devi Maiya’s Will’
Khushi walked through the living room, rushing past the kitchen window and Arnav, ducking her head to avoid his eyes. Suddenly, she felt him grab her arm, twirling her around into his chest and holding her tightly. Out of the corner of her eye she saw orange sparks shooting through the kitchen opening.
“Are you alright?” he asked, causing her to raise her head and be caught in his chocolate brown gaze.
She only had time to nod slightly before she heard Anjali’s voice behind her. “Oh God, Chotte are you alright? Khushi-ji you didn’t get hurt did you?”
“Di it’s alright, we are both fine.” Arnav replied for both of them, not removing his grip from her arms.
Nodding, Anjali hurried away after seeing that they were both indeed fine. Khushi moved to get him to release her arms but his hands tightened. Glancing up at him again, she quickly averted her eyes and blushed at the way he was gazing at her.
“You sure you’re alright?”
Nodding more firmly this time, she stepped away from him causing him to finally release her. Turning quickly she hurried outside to the pool, missing the way he gazed at her retreating form.
Stopping by the pool, Khushi finally paused to catch her breath.
“Hai Devi Maiya, what are you doing to me? I don’t even like Arnav-ji and you’re making me have dhak dhak heart beats whenever I am near him!”
Suddenly, the area around her darkened. Looking up, Khushi stared in confusion as the sun was covered by dark clouds and lightning struck down, hitting a tree close to where she was standing.
Letting out a yelp, she jumped away, screaming her next prayer. “I’m sorry I’m sorry I do like him, I like him a lot!”
Not wanting anymore events to happen, she rushed back inside, not seeing the cloud quickly disperse and the sun start shining again.’
