Art Report 1: Umbra-Regina
My first art report will be one about an artist that has caught my eye, and not in a good way. I honestly don’t know where to begin, but let us start with the beginning.
Umbra-Regina is a deviant art user that has been on this site, or better said, this account, for 11 months. I have been looking at her art since a few accounts she had before. ‘TheDemonicDarkrai’ ‘KrystaltheDarkrai’ were a few of those names, but she’s better known as Krystal.
Beside her art, her attitude as an artist is something I was troubled with. As a reporter, I have been looking at several artists, and I never have seen someone like her. Asking for donations, but lowering her commission prices while she wants points, or money is one of the many things that have caught my eye. Why she does this, is unknown, but for someone who does commissions, this is a bad example.
She also spends points and money to commission others, which is strange. If she needs money and points, then why commissioning others while saying it is for ‘real life issues’?
While I have seen people suggesting not to lower her prices, she doesn’t took their advice at all. That is one of the other things, asking for advice but not doing something with it. She had asked for advice on her art, which some had spent a bit of their time on to look at what she could improve, and tried to help her in the best way they can. However, I never saw her using the advice on her artwork.
That’s not everything, though. Her behavior towards her watchers, friends, situations where people stated their mind… It was something no artist should do.
When a watcher states their mind about something, be it directly pointed at her, or not, she takes this in an unprofessional way, often making call-out journals to ‘inform’ her watchers about the way Krystal’s treated, which results into a huge amount of call-outs, the other user being scolded at by her watchers, and her making fun of the situation.
It surprises me that she’s not aware that her attitude is similar to those a few of those who have actually insulted her. Over 70% of the time, she acts like this to people who haven’t insulted her and just said they didn’t agree with her, or even didn’t agree with something else, and Krystal taking it too personal.
On the internet, you shouldn’t be taking things too personal, though.
However, Krystal takes thing to the level where that border is crossed a lot of times.
Something else I have noticed is how she makes abuse of her popularity. In my opinion, I just wonder if people watch her for her art, or the fact she gives away points. Again, I still wonder why she asks for donations then, as Krystal spends her points on commissioning others or give them to people.
I have seen popular artists around the site, and often they’re either popular due their high quality of artwork, or due they give away points.
She had ranted about an artist who gained popularity due he gave away points, but… Does Krystal know she actually does the same thing?
If you wonder why I point this out, it is due I have seen a situation with her and another user. Krystal put the other user up as one of her best friends, but when that user stated their mind, she had deleted that friend of hers from her page. From looking back, that user had given her a lot of advice before, and it took only one thing for them to be de-friended.
I know I wouldn’t watch someone who has acted this way towards their friends. I believe people aren’t being honest to her either, as they don’t want to have a call-out directed to them.
When someone has an intimidating behavior and easily does a call-out journal to make it look like they’re the victim, I would be afraid too. I wouldn’t be honest at all.
That alone makes me feel like people don’t help her out with her artwork, as they say ‘it is good!’ while, in my opinion, it could use a lot of improvement.
Her art isn’t good. I have seen her getting worse at it. Krystal doesn’t know how to place her shading, her anatomy is bad to the point she only can draw a few Pokemon, in this case it being Darkrai, and her use of colors, line art, dimension, and contrast is a letdown as well.
The fact she calls her characters ‘original’, is an insult. A while ago, I saw her telling people not to make their characters a Pokemon recolor, but when I look at her own characters…
Krystal, the…. GardevoirDarkraiSpider… hybrid? As Gardevoir, she’s just a recolor with a few attributes. As Darkrai… To be honest, I don’t know what this character is anymore. She made her too complicated, to the point her powers are overpowered.
Sebastian, the Darkrai Spider thing… As Darkrai, he’s just a recolor as well. I can’t even tell if he has a different form too, or if he’s a spider and a Darkrai mix. His powers are also, as I would say it, OP.
They have a family, but how long will it take before she gives them a different form until the point no one can figure out what they are? I don’t know, but as a Pokemon lover, her characters are a letdown.
Krystal, the character, has undergone several design changes, but one thing never changed: She is a Mary Sue.
A Pokemon like her shouldn’t be too complicated.
When someone makes a design that looks different, but says it is inspired due her, she’s not honored about it, but sees it as ‘design theft’ and not being ‘original’. This, is also a bad example of how an artist should act towards others. If it isn’t traced, or the design not being exactly the same, then she has nothing to say about it.
One of her designs, the Fennekin/Darkrai fusion, was also inspired by one another artist as I have seen it before, but that artist didn’t rant at them for doing an almost exact copy. What gives her the right to rant them?
But back to her art, she’s not doing anything original, nor her art is perfect. She draws fan art, yes, but calling that ‘original’ isn’t really in the right place, unless the poses, the dynamic effects and the use of a background was better. If I would say it, Krystal her art is to be compared to a low level artist, and her attitude isn’t making it better.
Would I recommend this artist for commissions? No.
Would I recommend to watch this artist? No.
How would I rate this artist? 2/10.
I have little to no positive things to point out, sadly. This saddens me.
