“What is it, what is it?” Karamatsu chanted, bouncing with his hands over his eyes. Behind him was the devilish fiend and his self appointed “guardian”, Osomatsu, who was currently leading him through the woods.
“Well I tell you what it’s not,” Osomatsu said matter-of-factly, “It’s not your stick toy thing...because I broke that.” He recalled snapping the small branch in two amidst their game of knight and dragon. Surprisingly the kid didn’t cry when his prop was destroyed, but the disappointment on his face didn’t sit right with Osomatsu. The irony of a devil feeling bad for a child was not lost on him, but he paid it no mind. They came to a patch of thicket, and Karamatsu was held still.
“Ah, found it!” and before Karamatsu could ask what he meant, Osomatsu had cleared away the shrubbery in a fiery breath. The cinders fell over something shiny underneath, which Osomatsu dug a clawed hand into the pile. From the ashes he pulled a short sword, gleaming silver and rustic bronze at the hilt. Karamatsu stared in delight, “Where did you get that?”
Prideful grin on face, Osomatsu held his hands forward so the young boy could get a closer look, “Sixteenth century. It’s a broadsword - used only by brave knights to fight off big bad fire breathers,” he lied, “And it’s yours now.”
The boys eyes widened in pleasant surprise, “Mine?”
Osomatsu shrugged, “Sure kid. You wanna fight a dragon right? Gotta have a dragon sword.” He figured giving Karamatsu a dangerous weapon would balance out his guilt. The sword was snatched from his hands, now being swung around by a delighted Karamatsu.
“Thank you, nii-san, thank youuu!” he laughed, cutting through a bush.
Osomatsu chuckled darkly, “Oh don’t thank me yet kid...”and a lengthy forked tongue slithered from between his lips. Karamatsu turned around to find Osomatsu breathing steam through his nostrils, claws extended slightly in his menacing stance. He spewed a few small fireballs as Karamatsu held up his sword in knowing defense, “...You’ve got a dragon to slay.”
