'' Fishermen are exposed to beings who, under the appearance of large fish, are in reality incarnations of the Devil, or the dead.

Before we had exorcised the one whom the people of the bay of Saint-Malo call Nicole, who for them is sometimes the demon himself, sometimes a severe fisheries guard, sometimes a wicked fisherman who obtained from the Devil, his deathbed, the power to transform himself in this way to torment his former companions. It showed itself as well near rocks as on the shoals.''

The devil also appeared in the woods, either to conclude pacts or to preside over the sabbaths. In the Puisaye, the aspirant witches would go to the biggest oak of the crossroads, before midnight. At midnight, they would burn a black hen while screaming three times: “Belzebuth! come, I give myself to you!” The devil would appear immediately, and when the man [or woman] had put a cross on a writing by which they sell their soul, they’d be granted the power to do evil.

LE MATAGOT, OU CHAT D'ARGENT : (Folklore de France)

''The silver cat, mandragot or matagot is, in the folklore of Brittany, Gascony, Provence, and Languedoc, a generally black and evil cat obtained by a sorcerer in exchange for his soul. He is supposed to wander through some mysterious places during the night, and return at dawn with a stock of gold louis for his master. If the cat neglects it or does not reward it, the cat becomes offended and can take cruel revenge. Sometimes this cat is said to serve not one, but nine masters, and lead the last one to hell.'' As soon he's away, the dressmaker sees tears streaming from the mare's eyes, &, thinking he sees the Devil, he makes the sign of the cross.

But immediately she recovers the ability to speak, & tells him that she's condemned to serve as a mount for the demon, until she has been bloodied.''
