Bearskin of Wealth (Day 3 of Magic Item March, a 31-day series of homebrewed magic items)
(image source: tvtropes - Literature/Bearskin; image description: A black and white line drawing depicts a very hairy barefoot man wearing a bearskin and holding a walking stick. Three children run away from him in the bottom left of the image, another child peers out from behind a gnarled leafless tree in the midground, and another figure runs away in the background. A small dog cowers in fear of the man to the right.)
wondrous item (rare, requires attunement)
The pockets of this filthy matted bearskin fill with 20 gp at dawn every day, more than enough money to live an aristocratic lifestyle (PHB pg 157-158).
Curse. This item is cursed, a fact that is revealed only when an identify spell is cast on the bearskin or you attune to it. Attuning to the bearskin curses you until you are targeted by a remove curse spell or if you voluntarily give away all of your money for an entire year. While cursed, you have disadvantage on Charisma (Persuasion) and Charisma (Deception) checks due to the disgust that the bearskin evokes in others and are unable to remove the bearskin.
Background
The bearskin of wealth is the brainchild of a particularly twisted devil of Minauros who specialized in making deals with desperate or greedy people. He would disguise himself as an unassuming humanoid and find people at their lowest, drowning their sorrows in a tavern, or approach them in a gambling hall while they were riding high on the pleasures of their surroundings and make them an offer they couldn’t refuse: money enough to live in the upper crust for the rest of their lives, and all they would have to do is wear the magical coat on his back for it to work. Thinking this an incredible deal, the unsuspecting dupe eagerly agrees and puts on the coat, only to find that its true form is that of a stinking bearskin. True to the devil’s word, gold and silver appear in the bearskin’s pockets every morning, but the cursed soul will never know kindness from another person while they wear the horrible coat.
Story Hooks
A talking bear emerges from a copse of trees and asks the adventurers for help. It is one of a magical lineage of animals blessed by a nature spirit millenia ago, and it is being hunted for its pelt by a fiendish opponent. Shortly after meeting the bear, a cadre of devils appears and demands that the party hand over the bear or else.
A repulsive man in a bearskin sits in a cage in the middle of the town square and asks you to help him in return for 10 gold pieces. If you agree, he tells you that his bearskin is cursed to deny him human comfort unless he gives away all his money for a year. When he arrived in town months ago, the greedy townsfolk and the corrupt town guard chained him up in order to keep the money flowing directly to them.
