D’Angelo - Voodoo (2000)
On this day, January 25, 2000, Voodoo, the second studio album by D’Angelo, was released. Four-and-a-half years after his debut Brown Sugar, D’Angelo’s Voodoo came out to great acclaim and debuted at no. 1 on the Billboard 200. Working extensively with Questlove and the Soulquarians music collective, the album rose out of impromptu jam sessions after a period of intense study of the history of jazz, funk, hip hop, blues, and soul, contributing to the album’s sustained casual, laidback—occasionally even messy—vibe. One of the most acclaimed albums of the year, Voodoo is now considered among the best of the aughts and a creative milestone of neo-soul era.
