“Don’t. Don’t you dare say anything about Charmaine,” he retorted to Deimos, the true son of Ares and god of fear and terror. Devlin knew better than allow himself to be provoked by him but this was about his sister Charmaine. He cannot upset Ares and yet he had enough courage to talk back. Soon, his anger disappeared and was replaced with a deep state of melancholy and realization.

“The truth is, I did not care for her as much as I should have. I failed her, and she has every right to react the way she is doing.”

   Calypso’s declaration broke his heart. He was happy to a degree, but mostly devastated at knowing that it terrified her to admit this. He wondered what he can say. What is there to say in such a situation? Devlin did understand, maybe not exactly what she was feeling, but can understand where she was coming from. Centuries of being abandoned can lead anyone to give up hope in love altogether, so she had every reason to feel afraid.

   “Your feelings are valid,” he finally spoke up, then reached to hold both of her hands that created a shadow of something like a bridge on the cave walls behind them. The flickering fire gave them warmth, and in that afternoon it was also mainly what they were hearing- the cracking of the firewood because not many words were being exchanged until now. 

   “I’ve loved you for as long as I knew what love was. Even when I was a young boy I would hear stories about you and I was in love with you ten years ago when I was a full fledged warrior out to find my quest and purpose. I did not know then my purpose was you. To know you love me back it’s… more than I can ever imagine to receive in this lifetime. I am truly happy to hear this and I will do all I can to ease any of your discomforts.”

“I have... considered it before. I think it’s possible- as there have been halfbloods who have been granted immortality. It’s not something I want to test, though.”

What do you think happened to your mother? Have your or Isabelle actually confirmed whether she's dead? (For Devlin)

“I think she was dead to me a while ago, I don’t know why you would bring her up.”

That was it. There was nothing else to say, but Devlin now felt numb at the mere mention of his mother. Most days he was doing well, ignoring her whole existence, not thinking it was important to know whether she was dead or alive, and then someone mentions her and it was like- all that build up and hard work was for nothing. He would regress and fall into the deepest pits of his misery, as if her afflictions were not years ago but just the last hour. His heart felt heavy and his stomach felt sick.

“I’m sorry, will you excuse me?” He stood up and decided to leave the room, needing a breather.

Isabelle slipped out of her bed to go find Devlin after slipping on her slippers and wrapping a blanket around herself. She must've had nightmares about him dying so many times she had lost count but for a while, they had ceased. Now they were back and she instantly fell back into the habit of fleeing to her brother for comfort. "Dev," She sniffled as soon as she found him.

Devlin awoke to the familiar sound of Isabelle, and he knew that she was real and not a dream. He did not dream anymore. He did not know what that meant, nor could he recall the last dream that he had, but maybe it was for the best. With all his experiences, both in the human realm and underworld, he was sure they would be frightening anyway. Purefoy Mansion felt like an empty void. The void felt comfortable, as it gave him time to recharge and become himself again. 

Giving comfort was an act that came naturally to Devlin. Especially to his little sister who seemed distraught. He flicked on the light switch near his bed, only looking a tad bit sleepy even though for the most part he was awake. His arms were already around her, rubbing her back gently and asking, “what’s wrong, Isabelle? Bad dreams?”

Devlin was stuck remembering one of their old memories, just as soon as one of the Herondales asked him that question.

Oh Cariad, don’t be silly…

The way she pronounced the word Cariad made him inadvertently inhale, a soft gasp at how beautiful it sounded even though he never did get to understand what it meant. It sounded beautiful because she was addressing him in that way. When shutting his eyes, he was able to imagine droplets of water on a leaf. The properties of the water allows it to remain as touch and not roll down. Not unless there was an influence from the outside. Cecily had always been the personification of rain to him, to his embers of flame.

Cecily was like that gust of wind, the one that did not allow Devlin to simply remain where he’d weather away, evaporate. No, she was the spirit who was like a gust of wind, making, forcing him to completely the journey to the bottom where he’d be absorbed by the soil and sucked back in the underworld. 

She was the person who changed everything, and maybe that is why he was afraid of what their current meetings might entail, whether he was actually seeing her now or her one day turning out to be just an extension of his imagination. That he was just dreaming and he’ll wake up back in hell. That happened too many times.

“I don’t think it will,” he admitted, his heart breaking as he spoke. “We have to honor the past, but also realize that we can’t go back to it. A new future is in store for us and I am not sure what it entails.”
