The Megazine hits 400, and there’s no shortage of familiar faces. Devlin hasn’t aged a day since he first appeared in the first issues of volume 2 of the comic (which I think would be issue 21 if they had decided to use that volume numbering for the early years), which may have more to do with his vampiric nature than any skincare regime.

Although no longer written by John Smith (sadly- I am not sure what he does now- since the last series of Indigo Prime saw him disappear from writing duties after only the first couple of chapters, I feel I haven’t heard of anything written by him, and wonder what happened), Devlin is still Devlin, and Kot captures his voice well, while Dowling perfectly displays the gap-toothed grin and perky moustache.

There’s always something faintly comedic about Waugh, in a risqué vein, as though he carries a little bit of Carry On.. DNA in his genes, and here he shows up with his suitcase and pink waterproof jacket, a bright green dildo distinctly protruding from his breast pocket. This seems a perfectly Devlin thing to do- while one might laugh at the incongruity of the item, there’s no real surprise at its presence. It’s probably not even the strangest thing he’s brought to an exorcism, and it turns out to not be incongruous at all- it has a purpose, although perhaps not the one you expect.

With the exception of Judges Dredd and Anderson, I believe Waugh is the oldest strip in this anniversary issue, so its good to see that the character has been given this place in Megazine history. It seems a clear indication that there are more stories to be told about the vampire exorcist- his appearances have been a lot less frequent than others throughout his 26 or so years, but clearly he still has an audience for his charm and cutting bon mots and so perhaps we will seem a little more often.
