Getting to Know...
DEVMO.
'Stayin’ Here' is the perfect melancholic summertime jam. In the video, we see rapper DEVMO out at a party on the beach, trying to distract herself from her bad mood. At the party, she draws upon the feelings of isolation that you get when feeling alone amidst a group of people. You want to be there because you don’t want to feel alone but lyrics like “No one would notice if I drown right now” lead us to believe that despite being around a bunch of people, DEVMO is still drowning in her own thoughts.
DEVMO has opened for artists such as Angel Haze, Snow Tha Product, Azealia Banks, Elle King, and more. From SXSW showcases to Splash House in Palm Springs, DEVMO has performed all across the country for her engaged and dedicated fan base. Being a queer female rapper has its obvious challenges, but DEVMO charges right through with irrefutable confidence and drive. Not to mention, her combined style of melodic hooks and fast-paced rapping has coined a style all her own.
We chatted to DEVMO to find out more about 'Stayin' Here', her influences, musical journey and more. Read the Q&A below.
What led you to make music? Who and/or what are your influences?
"I think it was Britney Spears' 'Hit Me Baby One More Time' music video that originally made me want to make music. She was everything I wanted to be when I was 6. Then I discovered rap music and I knew I wanted to do that. Poetry with rhyme and some melody. It was like a complicated math equation I wanted to solve."
You released the video for your single 'Stayin' Here' last month. What can you tell us about the track and the visuals? What do you hope fans will take away from it?
"What's funny about the video is we filmed it at my going away party. I moved to Chicago for 6 months to get away from Hollywood and spend some time healing. The feelings I was feeling when I wrote that song consumed me while I was in LA. I was depressed and really didn't want to do anything. So I left. I guess I just wanted to know some people felt the way I felt. Stuck at a party you didn't want a be at but scared to leave because you'd be alone with your thoughts. A lot of people who could relate, did reach out, and it made me happy that I wasn't alone and they weren't either."
What challenges have you faced in the music industry and how have you overcome them?
"My biggest challenge I haven't overcome yet. That's the challenge of breaking through all the way, and "making it" so to speak. I've accomplished so much and I am very proud of myself but I have a long journey ahead of me still."
And based on your musical journey so far, what has been your biggest takeaway/piece of advice?
"I guess not to take it all too seriously. Sometimes I'd delve so deep into my music that I forgot who I was or what made me laugh. Music was ALL that mattered and I actually don't think that's a healthy way to live."
Finally, what does the rest of 2019 hold for DEVMO? Is there new music on the horizon?
"I'm starting a tour in Austin, TX Oct 1st that ends on November 14th in Ontario, CA. I'm writing every day and next year will be FILLED with new music. You can also expect a happier me."
