The Rev has got some interesting poll results about what Scots want from the Smith Commission - (spoiler alert!) it's the Full Fiscal Autonomy version of devo-max, which means ownership of all our resources (including oil) and responsibility for all our expenditure, paying into the Westminster purse for defence and foreign affairs only. Looking at these results I don't know why Scotland rejected independence, because even if we get FFA, its still all dependent on Westminster letting us have it, and they can change their minds any time even if we do get it. Which would be depressing, except that whether I stare down the frustrating devo-max road, or down the painful devo-fuck-all trail, I think I can see independence at the end of them both.
I would recommend NOT defining it as "indy by the back door", because that's just bollocks.
Bitter Together
This may just be the new slogan, post referendum, with all the promises being broken, the NHS failing, the news that oil is not running out, and the dawning realization of having been lied to.
That was then...
“People want to see change. A no vote will deliver faster, safer and better change than separation.”
— David Cameron, Ed Miliband and Nick Clegg, 16 September 2014
...this is now
“The Labour leader says devolution is not the most important issue for most people - despite a warning from his predecessor.”
— Sky News, 20 September 2014
I'll tell you why. It's not just about you. For two years it's all been about you and you had your election. The No side was winning in every pole bar one BEFORE new powers were promised. Now you want more powers. Fair enough. I support Scotland getting more powers. If Scottish MP's are the only ones allowed to vote on their income tax, why the hell should they then be allowed to come down to Westminster and vote on English income tax? That's why we're asking for power too.
Congrats on missing the point of the post. We were promised by the three leaders that we’d have a fast-track timetable for devo-max if a No vote came through. It did, and yet Cameron’s first speech on the matter was to change the topic completely and now they’re totally back-pedalling b/c they’ve got us again. My problem is with the fact that this whole thing only came up as a tool for the Tories to sweep the indyref movement under the carpet.
TL;DR- I call BS.
What has happened has happened. We, the people of Scotland, now need to ensure that our voices continue to be heard and continue campaign our hardest for our future. With 45% of the Scottish supporting a Yes vote the Westminster government simply cannot ignore our unhappiness and distrust in the current situation. DevoMax is now the only option.
