39. leaning into the other’s side from the touching prompts for Jinana and Sacha?

Jinana is - or at least was - accustomed to a certain sort of relationship. These relationships have rules... moreover they have roles. One knows where one stands at all times.

This is not like that.

This is ridiculous, s/he tells hirself. Alexander isn't even here. After wrestling with a vague anxiety all the way up to this gathering, it is an absurdly crushing disappointment, hot in the eyes and heavy in the chest.

Heron glances at hir, but mercifully says nothing.

It is with an equally absurd lifting of the spirit that s/he spots a familiar flag of red hair some time later, as Alexander makes his way through the tavern. His eyes scan the room, widening slightly as they catch hirs.

S/he makes a small gesture indicating that he should come to where s/he and Heron are seated, spectators to an intense game of cards, and they scoot over to make room for him at the bench. They exchange greetings cordially enough, but Jinana can feel an acute tension in the leg that presses to hirs, and in the way Alexander holds himself, alternately watching the game and staring into his stein as if it might tell him secrets.

After several interminable minutes of this, Heron's mental voice arrives magically in Jinana's mind: Do something, Jinana.

Hir mind races uselessly for a few seconds; then s/he leans lightly against Alexander's side. For a brief instant, he goes nearly rigid in surprise, and s/he fears s/he has miscalculated. But then, slowly, he begins to relax, his body resting against hirs in turn. S/he wonders if he's suffered all the same doubts and fears since their last encounter, the worry and the second-guessing.

S/he wonders if he felt the same little leap inside, to find hir here.

"I'm glad you could make it," s/he says, pitched for his ears alone.

"Aye," he responds, "I am, too." There's a light flush of color across his cheeks, but he smiles.

It has been over two years since Heron and Jinana returned to Vesuvia - two years of hard work and dedication, rebuilding their business in the wake of the devastation caused by the Red Plague. It’s only in recent months that things have become comfortable enough for them to have any real leisure time at all.

They have been spending a fair amount of that time in the company of one Caspian Du Vignoble; they are trouble of the very best sort, and a night out with them is certainly never dull. (If it also happens to involve a tavern brawl or two, none of them consider this to be a detriment.)

It is through Caspian that they came to be introduced to Alexander MacRionnag - rather taciturn, truth be told, keeping to himself at one end of the table. This in no way deterred Jinana from immediately introducing him to the large, metallic-green scarab beetle inhabiting a pocket of hir skirt. S/he then allowed the insect to dine on a piece of fruit from hir own plate, watching it with the sort of rapt adoration typically reserved for children and puppies, only to let it fly out a nearby window when it was done eating.

Perhaps this peculiar display was in some way disarming, because s/he did succeed in getting Alexander to talk to hir, if mostly in monosyllables. 

Now, however, it seems quite natural for them to talk all night over a succession of empty tankards, to laugh and to wax philosophical. They have spent this day walking off the effects of just such a night, leaving groaning compatriots behind to nurse their hangovers. (Heron, of course, simply restored himself with magic before departing on business of his own.)

Though the midday sun beats down without mercy, the open air clears the mind, and Selasi’s sweet rolls restore the body. Loath to leave the sheltering coolness of the shadows after their meal, the two of them instead linger to speak of small things, or indeed nothing at all. It is nice to simply enjoy each other’s company, and to be able to admit that they do.

It feels quite natural, too, for Jinana to reach up and tuck an unruly lock of blood-red hair back behind Alexander’s ear... and then to tilt hir head just so, to lift hir chin so that s/he can touch hir lips to his, very gently.

S/he can feel him go tense, though he makes no move to avoid hir; when s/he pulls back, his eyes are wide in astonishment. “You just kissed me,” he says, not quite accusingly, his voice low and rough with… something.

A sudden, unaccountable fear grips hir - that s/he has overstepped, that a single impulsive action has undone something that took such time to build. S/he very nearly apologizes. But there is no point in dissembling. Instead she responds, quietly but firmly: “I did.”

A flush creeps into his cheeks, his gaze seeming to become caught upon hir lips; s/he feels his hand seek hirs, taking it into his own, and the fearful constriction around hir heart begins to relax. A faint humor tinges hir voice as s/he asks if he would like hir to do it again. 

The fear melts away entirely as he assents, leaning in to meet hir, and for a short time, there is only this - hesitation giving way to surety, a communication all its own.

And then another sort of communication barges its way directly into Jinana’s brain: The shipment has arrived. If you can spare some time away from your alchemist friend, I could use a little assistance from you and Saheli.

All right, all right. Your timing is awful but I’ll be there shortly, s/he mentally replies. I’ll even take a gondola.

S/he finds that Alexander has noted hir distraction, looking down on hir with a concerned frown. “Is everything… all right?” he asks, and the uncertainty in his voice pricks at hir.

“It is,” s/he assures him, smiling. “Heron just has the worst timing in the world. Sometimes I think he does it on purpose.” S/he rises, the creases in hir skirt from sitting on the steps magically smoothing themselves away. “Unfortunately, work calls. See you again soon, I hope?” Alexander nods, and Jinana bends down to give one last, lingering little kiss, gratified to feel him relax under it.

Hir step is light as s/he takes hir leave, humming slightly to hirself as s/he walks.
