The only love that Ilia got as a child was from her mother. Her non-biological human father hated her because she was the result of an affair his wife was having with another faunus. Her mother was the only person who loved her, so she was rather important to the chameleon child.
After her mother died of an illness, she was left with her father - who then grew abusive and eventually kicked her out. After that, she learnt to view family as something she could never truly have in blood - only in bond - as she then came to view the White Fang.
