I think more people need to go watch Total Forgiveness on Dropout. Not just because it’s great, but because it illustrates a point about where we are at in the American Economy.

There are people suffering from debt far worse than a lot of people think. There are people out there that willing to do what Ally and Grant did just to pay off their debt and the fact that it’s so hard to be able to pay off that debt in today’s financial situation and FAR more of them than there are people who are living in comfort.

We say eat the rich for a VERY good reason.

Hot very controversial take: Crazy Rich Asians was bad because it glorifies capitalist ideals and rewards the hyper rich with zero to no consequences and they don’t learn a lesson in humility or that money can’t buy away racism. It’s classist as absolute shit. The non-rich woman in the movie is demonized and constantly made fun of and reminded of her financial status in comparison to those far more well-off than herself. The rich don’t learn a valued lesson at the end, they just sort of accept that she’s not rich but they don’t change in any significant way that makes them better or less morally-disingenuous people.

If you listen to the author’s Terry Gross interview on NPR you’ll see he’s...so far removed from normalcy and the average lives of people it’s literally disgusting. He describes his mansion on a hill as “modest” and his life of “old money” and luxury as “comfortable.” Nah, comfortable is being able to pay your bills with a little left over to treat yourself every once in a while. Being rich and inheriting your fam’s stinky real estate money isn’t comfortable, it just means you’re living a life of extreme privilege but trying to downplay it so you don’t appear too out of touch with reality.

The movie - and book - are bad because of the plot and pro-capitalist pro-rich story and message. That’s it. It’s a bad, classist message that ostracizes the average person. 

Was the movie important because it had an all Asian cast? Absolutely, that’s amazing and great and I applaud them for that because Asians are often token stereotypes in media and we desperately need to un-fuck our whitewashed movie and television casting. 

It’s still a bad story with a bad message, don’t get so wrapped up in the cast that you overlook it’s glaring issues.
