Let's define "devout," shall we?

We had a big fancy work event last night. At one point in the evening I was sitting by myself. There weren’t many open chairs so a guy sat down next to me and started to make conversation. Typically, my being Muslim was brought up. Apparently the guy’s step-dad is muslim too. He referenced my hijab and asked if I was a “devout Muslim.” I told him I was a moderately practicing Muslim but wouldn’t consider myself devout. He asked if I pray five times a day - I said I try. We had already established that I don’t drink and I had previously agreed with him that his step-dad’s gambling is haram. And so somehow he concluded that must mean I’m devout… But following some [pretty basic] rules doesn’t make someone “devout” to me. Being devout means so much more. You don’t do the minimum, you go above and beyond. For some reason it has a spiritual connotation to it for me as well.

But he seemed so insistent that I must be a “devout Muslim” because I wear a scarf (and do some other basic rules). And I don’t see myself that way at all. I am so far from being a “devout Muslim” and when someone says I am or implies I am, it just makes me feel like a hypocrite.

I'm not a devout muslim whatsoever yet I agree with that statement..
