Jaw was tight, teeth clenched as if fighting back tears. He never really showed much in the way of crying. But this...it was raw.
He sat across from her, hunched over on the cheap motel bed. His eyes focused purely on her in front of him. Hand grasped the half empty beer bottle. Fingers wet from the condensation, a sign of how long it had sat in his grasp.
The words hit him. Hit him like a freight train. How could he make a promise like that? Could he even keep it? Would she hate him for it? Questions bombarded his mind. All he wanted to do was shut them out. A lift of the bottle to try and quell the storm inside. Green eyes blinked and looked downward.”If I can’t-,” he cut off feeling the words choke in his throat. “If I can’t save you,” his voice was low and gruff. I’ll find a way, he thought to himself. Damn it he wouldn’t sleep until he did. “I’ll do what I have to,” he lifted the bottle again cooling his throat as he looked back at her.
