Porepunkah Shooting: What We Know About the Accused, Dezi Freeman
VICTORIA – The small town of Porepunkah in Victoria's Alpine region was rocked by a tragic shooting incident on Tuesday that left one woman dead and a community in mourning. As police continue their investigation, attention has turned to the alleged perpetrator, Dezi Freeman.
The 42-year-old man, also from Porepunkah, has been charged with one count of murder following the death of a 49-year-old woman. Here is what we currently know about the accused and the ongoing case.
The Incident
Emergency services were called to a property on the Great Alpine Road in Porepunkah, approximately 300 kilometres north-east of Melbourne, just after 4:30 pm on Tuesday. Upon arrival, they found a woman, yet to be formally identified, deceased at the scene. A man, identified as Dezi Freeman, was arrested a short time later without incident.
Who is Dezi Freeman?
Freeman is understood to have been a local to the area. Prior to this incident, he was known to the public through a very different lens: as a contestant on the reality TV show My Kitchen Rules (MKR) in 2019.
He appeared on the show's 10th season as part of a duo called "The Mates" with his friend, John. Their run on the show was brief, eliminated after the first instant restaurant round. Their introductory video portrayed them as fun-loving, passionate home cooks from regional Victoria.
This public persona stands in stark contrast to the charges he now faces. Neighbors and those who knew him have described the allegations as "shocking" and "out of character," leaving the tight-knit community struggling to reconcile the two images.
The Charges
Dezi Freeman was charged with one count of murder on Wednesday night. He faced a bedside hearing at the Wangaratta Magistrates' Court on Thursday, as he was receiving medical treatment for a pre-existing condition at the time of his arrest. He did not apply for bail and was formally remanded in custody. His next court date is set for a later time.
The Victim
While police have not yet formally released the name of the victim, she has been widely identified in media reports as a 49-year-old local woman. The exact nature of the relationship between the accused and the victim has not been officially disclosed by Victoria Police, who stated their investigation is ongoing.
Homicide Squad detectives are leading the investigation and have indicated that the two individuals were known to each other.
