History /// ‘Openluchtscholen’ or ‘Open Air Schools’ were in the open air, especially created for children with tuberculosis or severely weakened children. In Drenthe there was such a school in the 20's and 30's of the last century in the Sanatorium ‘the Zulthe’ in Roden. Here, children received the opportunity to overcome the disease in the healthy forest air. To also provide them with education, an open space was created amongst the surrounding trees. Here lined up, on a wooden floor were folding tables and chairs at which the children could read and write. An appointed teacher by the institution schooled these children and afterwards the students could have fun and/or relax in a capping wooden awning.
