LCD Soundsystem Kick Off 12-Night Knockdown Center Residency
LCD Soundsystem – Knockdown Center – November 20, 2025
Many people know the holiday season has officially kicked in when the Christmas lights go up around town and the Halloween candy is replaced by candy canes in the stores. For a certain breed of NYC concertgoer, though, the top sign that ’tis the season is when LCD Soundsystem start their annual residency in town. The venue, dates and duration may have been fluid over the years, but regardless of the when and where, James Murphy and Co. are sure to spread the holiday cheer. This year’s residency at Knockdown Center in Queens opened last night and, if you were worried, rest assured that Santa Murphy will be leaving the catharsis of an unabashed dance party under your tree this year.
Walking out to Russ Ballard’s “New York Groove” and delivering a wallop of synth-bass in “Tribulations” the 12 Nights of Soundsystem were underway. The show split into three minishows each with its own highlights and mood. Over the opening hour, in between the nonstop dancing, I was struck by some of the lyrics that felt not only self-referential, but also a running commentary on the night and on the state of the world — from the opening attestation that “everybody makes mistakes” to Murphy promising, “This is the best news you’re getting all week” in “Tonite.” The first set closed with the highlight-reel triplet of “Time to Get Away,” “You Wanted a Hit” and “Home,” the crowd’s energy peaking with each strobe of the lights, the band showing the comfort and chemistry of a thousand live plays of each.
After a short break, LCD returned for another stanza that was anchored by the long, psychedelic groove of “45:33,” which blended through a long outro into “Someone Great” with a big audience sing-along. The last set was a crowd-igniting string of all-timer favorites. Opening with “North American Scum,” before the rafter-rattling “Dance Yrself Clean,” the drawn-out croon of “New York, I Love You, but You’re Bringing Me Down” and bringing it all home with “All My Friends,” it felt more like closing night than opening. This holiday party has no French hens, turtle doves, nor partridges, but the 12 nights of LCD Soundsystem do have 3 short sets, 2 disco balls and 1 nonstop dance party. —A. Stein | @Neddyo
