Mint Chutney (adjusted to be mild)

INGREDIENTS 1.5 Cup Mint Leaves (Pudina) 1 Cup Coriander Leaves (Dhania) ½ Cup Plain Yogurt 1-2 Green Chilli 2 Teaspoons Lemon Juice

INSTRUCTIONS Combine Mint Leaves, Coriander Leaves, Green Chillies, and a little bit of water and grind them to a smooth paste in magic bullet.

Beat some yogurt in a bowl and add Lemon Juice, Now add the paste of mint and coriander leaves and beat to mix everything to a smooth paste.

Mint Chutney is ready. Store it in the refrigerator in a clean airtight container for upto a week.

so there are a couple of naming choices in the worldbreaker saga that confuse me and I am not sure if they are intentional or an oversight.

1. Yisaoh Alais Garika. It’s pretty easy to spot that Dhai names are given name - matronym* - clan name, whereas Tai Mora names are only given name - matronym. See Kirana Javia Garika vs Kirana Javia, Tasia Gohina Garika vs Tasia Gohina and so on. Yet the Tai Mora’s Yisaoh also has the Garika moniker. This one I am rather sure is just an oversight because it just makes no sense.

2. Nava Sona and Lilia Sona. Why does Lilia have a hereditary last name? Nava’s cultural origin is a bit unclear: she lived in the woodland with Lilia for several years, but she is of Dorinah descent. Did she carry the tradition of family names with her? How do woodland Dhai names even work? And why is she referred to as Nava Isoail at some point in The Mirror Empire, is that a second given name or what?

3. How do clan names work in general? We know they are not strictly hereditary since Javia Mia Sorai’s children are named Garika. Clans are about territory as well as about family, so maybe based on the location where they are born/grow up? At the same time it’s a whole plot point that the Garikas want to claim the Kai seat from Ahkio Javia Garika. So he’s not really a Garika? What is going on?

4. Some people listed in the glossary have clan names that do not correspond to any of the 14 clans, like Gaila Karinsa Pana. They are mostly minor characters. What.

5. Characters from The Mirror Empire usually have full names no matter how minor, but characters introduced in The Broken Heavens, like Avosta or Salifa, do not, even when they are easy enough to infer. Like, Li Kai Hasao’s name would probably be Hasao Meyna Osono.

*I use matronym as a shorthand since the terminology in the books isn’t always precise. Dhai canonically choose gender freely and have multiple parents, but sometimes mother is used interchangeably with the person giving birth, so it’s not always clear which is actually meant.
