Day five: christmas tree

It was hardly December and Christmas was already beginning to invade Hogwarts. Hagrid had gone out that day to find a few trees, in fact; one for each common room plus the Great Hall. Hermione smiled to herself when she saw a trail of pine needles leading from the front entrance to the Hall--Christmas had always been one of her favorite times of the year. She'd always spent it with family or, more recently, at Hogwarts or the Burrow. Memories came back to her as she walked along the corridors.

When she was five, her parents and grandparents let her stay up late and sing carols with them, drink eggnog, snack on cookies, until midnight when she was allowed to open a single present, leaving the rest for morning. The box she'd chosen held a snow globe. She stayed up the rest of the night in her room, shaking it and watching the snow fall. Every now and then, the toy people in the globe would move around and play with the faux snow--something she later realized was caused by her magic.

"Daydreaming about Weasley again, Granger?"

Malfoy strode up to her side and smirked.

"No. And 'again' is unnecessary as I never daydream about him, Malfoy. I was actually just reliving past Christmases."

"Are you sure about that, Granger? The never-daydreaming-about-Weasley? Because it's a bit pathetic how you stare at him during class sometimes."

Hermione's cheeks reddened. "I do not stare at him in class! And besides, why are you looking at me during class anyway, Malfoy? I'm a Mudblood and unworthy of your time, isn't that right?"

She glanced sideways at him and saw his jaw clench for a split second before regaining his composure.

"I don't look at you, Granger, I try to look around that frizzy little head of yours. I wouldn't be surprised if there were still cornish pixies stuck in there back from second year."

Hermione glared at him before taking a deep, calming breath. "I'm not going to let you ruin my Christmas spirit, Malfoy."

"Ah, but the season's only just begun, Granger."

Day three: snow

"I strongly disagree with you on that one, Granger."

He watched in disgust as she giddily fell to the ground and started flapping her arms and legs. She got up to admire her snow art and looked back at him.

"You can't honestly tell me you've never made a snow angel before, Draco."

"Actually, Granger, I can tell you that honestly. Who came up with the ingenious idea of lying down in snow, looking a fool, and getting your robes dirty? I'm sure you've read about it somewhere."

She looked at him with amusement. "Is Draco Malfoy afraid of snow?"

Draco scoffed. "Not afraid, Granger. Just obviously more civilized than yourself."

"You don't have to be boring to be civilized, Malfoy."

"Where are your examples, then? Weasley? He can hardly be considered civilized, the way he shovels food into his mouth. Potter? Far too much of a temper on that one. Let's face it, Granger, you don't keep very civilized company. Maybe that's why you think it's acceptable to make snow angels."

A moment after he finished speaking, Draco was hit right in the face with slush. He wiped it away and saw Granger smirking at him.

"Like I said, Malfoy, they can be used on more than just first years."

Day two: hot chocolate

Draco sat across their shared common room and watched her. Christmas Eve and she was sitting in front of the fire reading. Not in her House common room with Potter and Weasley like she should be, but in their common room.

It unsettled him. This Christmas was one he expected to--and would have preferred to--spend alone.

"Granger."

Nothing. No sign of acknowledgement whatsoever. Far too consumed in her stupid little book to pay him any mind. Well, there was a way to fix that. He left his chair and walked behind the couch. She sat crisscross, engrossed in her story, the flickering fire lighting up the top half of her face.

"A Christmas Carol?"

He was rewarded with a jump, a squeal, and a glare.

"What do you want, Malfoy?" She turned back to her book, but he knew she wasn't reading anymore. He walked around the couch and sat on the opposite end.

"Why aren't you with Potter and Weasley tonight, Granger?"

"The two of them seem to have become rather preoccupied lately. A fifth wheel is something I'd rather not be."

Draco raised an eyebrow. He knew Weasley and Brown were quite...enamored with each other, but who fell for Potter's hero complex?

"If my silent reading is bothering you, Malfoy, I'll just go read in my room."

"You turn pages at an overwhelming volume, Granger."

She smirked and set her book down. "Why aren't you with Zabini and Parkinson?"

"Why would I be?"

"Well they're-they're your friends, aren't they?"

He scoffed. "My friends are different from yours, Granger. Being in the dungeons would be no different from staying up here."

Hermione got up and grabbed her book. "Well, I'll leave you to it, then. And I'll put a silencing charm around my room so my page turning doesn't disturb you."

She got to the threshold before Draco instinctively walked over to her and pulled her around to face him. One hand moved up to cup her face and he kissed her. She tasted of peppermint and hot chocolate and he never wanted to pull away. And if air wasn't a necessity, he probably never would have. He leaned his forehead against hers momentarily before taking a step back. She was wide-eyed and stiff. Her lips were slightly parted and he wanted so badly to fit his bottom lip between them again, but his will held strong. He waited for her to say something, but as the silence stretched on, he grew more and more uncomfortable. Another beat of quiet and he turned on his heel and stalked to his bedroom, berating himself for doing something so stupid. He thought for a moment that he heard his name fall from her mouth but he didn't stop until he was safe behind his bedroom door.

Day one: mistletoe

Another bloody Christmas. Another stupid, bloody Christmas with his parents, the Parkinsons, the Notts, and the Greengrasses. Another stupid, bloody attempt to make things normal again after the stupid, bloody war. And Draco was fucking tired of it. He didn't want to sit around with Theo and listen to Pansy, Daphne, and Astoria swap secrets. He didn't want to watch all the parents get increasingly inebriated. He certainly didn't want to eat with the lot.

Draco pushed out of the seat he was in and stalked out of the Manor. He couldn't handle another minute of the grating, shrill laughter of the girls or the drunkards. The rush of the cold air calmed him, but only slightly. He walked along the snow-dusted streets of Wiltshire for a moment before rashly deciding to Disapparate. Having no precise destination in mind, he hoped to Merlin that he wouldn't get splinched before he felt the familiar compression take him.

He ended up in some Muggle town, he knew that. Everything just seemed so still; there was no sense of magic in the air. There was only one house down the street that looked lived in--it was the only one done up with Christmas lights and wreaths. He walked down to it out of curiosity.

His eyes widened for a moment before turning to a glare as a familiar bushy head walked past the front window. Following shortly behind was the idiot ginge. Weasley was smiling stupidly at Granger when he reached out to grab her hand. Draco followed Weasley's upward gaze and saw the two were under some mistletoe. Anger rose within him. Why did those idiots get to be so fucking happy? Why did they get to have it so fucking good? Why should he be punished for his father's faults?

Draco was stunned out of his thoughts as a warmth engulfed his hands. Focusing, he saw Granger had come out of her cozy little home and was looking up at him expectantly.

"What was that, Granger?"

A smile. "I said, would you like to come in and join us? It's terribly cold out, Draco. And my parents are always open to having more people around on Christmas Eve. The more the merrier, you know."

She tugged lightly on his hand. He looked down at their hands then back at her then towards the house. Weasley was standing in the doorway with a blank expression, hands in his pockets.

"Come on, Malfoy," she said softly. Another gentle tug and he couldn't get himself to resist. He took a step forward and her smile grew wide. Draco found himself smirking--there was something about that smile that made his heart race.

day two - accusation -------- Hermione sat on the edge of their bed with her damp palms pressing into her forehead. Her sobs were beginning to abate but the whole of her felt uncomfortably fragile. She wrapped her arms tightly around her and rocked. That bastard. That bloody fucking bastard. She wished with everything she had that there would have been one more paper to file, one more errand to run, one more something so she hadn't come home early.

But there wasn't and she did.

30 day writing challenge

day one - beginning --------- Draco could pinpoint the exact moment when he started hating Hermione Granger.

In fact, it would be the same moment as when he started to like her.

He was deadly jealous of her intelligence, of her skill, of the obvious favorability towards her in all classes save Potions. He hated her for being everything his father said she wasn't supposed to. Because, at age twelve, Draco hated anyone that went against what his father stated as truth. She was a Mudblood. She wasn't supposed to be besting him in every class. She wasn't supposed to be decent looking. She certainly wasn't supposed to have such a good grasp on her magic.

But he wasn't twelve anymore. Over the years, he'd come to admire all that about her; how she defied the odds, how Charms and Transfiguration just seemed to come naturally to her, how that Gryffindor bravery showed itself at the most opportune moments, how her eyes would spark went he said something that irritated her to bits, how she pursed her lips and clenched her fists and threw glares his way as she tried to control her temper.

Pre-Hogwarts Dramione yay! ------- Hermione tugged at her mum’s arm as they passed the playground. Anticipating her daughter’s desire for play, her mum smiled down at Hermione and released her hand. Hermione beamed back for only a moment before running off to the slides. She slowed to a saunter when she saw a pale, blonde, timid-looking boy at the foot of the steps. He was dressed funny for a warm spring day; he was covered neck-to-toe in a black cloak and probably more layers underneath.

“So what if I am?” he shot back haughtily. He looked her head to toe with a slight expression of disgust. Confused, Hermione looked herself over. She saw nothing out of place on her school skirt or button-up shirt and assumed there wasn’t a hair out of place on her ponytailed head.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” she asked finally.

He just shook his head and made his way up the steps.

Hermione, determined to get some sort of reaction from him, followed suit.

“I’m not the one dressed strangely, you know. Is that a new school uniform or something? Because I’ve never seen anyone else dress like that. Where is it you go to school, anyway? Mine’s just on the other side of this park. Or are you not from around here? Where are you fr–”

“I’m not from around here,” the boy grumbled before disappearing down the slide. Hermione followed and looked around her for the boy when she got to the bottom. She saw him sitting on one of the swings and made her way over. He looked over at her and rolled his eyes, but didn’t leave his spot – she took this as a positive sign and moved to take the swing next to him.

“So where are you from, then?” she asked as she sat down.

“Wiltshire,” he mumbled, staring at his feet.

Hermione’s eyebrows knitted together; so he was from the country. That qualified as ‘around here’ didn’t it? Did style really differ that much across England? Everyone she’d seen on the telly dressed similarly… she shrugged her shoulders and decided it would be rude to continue questioning him about his appearance.

“How far is that from here?”

“About two hours.”

“What are you in London for?”

“My mum needed to do some shopping.”

They sat in silence for a while until Hermione asked, “Where is it you go to school?”

The boy looked up from his shoes with an expression of concentration.

“I don’t go to school,” he said. “My mum teaches me.”

Hermione smiled. “Your mum—”

“Hermione, darling,” her mother called. “It’s time to go.”

Hermione whipped her head around when she was called and the turned back to the boy lightly blushing.

“Hermione?” he whispered.

Her blush deepened as she hastily said goodbye.

“Wait,” the boy said before she got up. “My…m-my name’s Draco.”

His face reddened slightly and Hermione smiled. She gave him a quick hug and hurried back to her mum. On her way, she stooped to pick up a flower. The moment she plucked it, its petals opened and closed as she carried it to her mother.

“Mummy, it’s doing it again!” she shouted. She looked at the flower in awe as she passed it to her mother.

“Hermione, sweetheart, you need to stop doing that,” she whispered severely. Her mother snatched the flower away and tossed it on the ground.

“But I can’t help it!”

“Yes, well, you need to try.”

Hermione took a final look around the playground and saw the boy, Draco, staring at her with wide eyes. She looked away, embarrassed, and tugged her mum along. ------- Wow, okay, so I wrote this a long time ago. I was planning on making it a prologue to a multi-chapter that spanned across all their Hogwarts years, and maybe I will eventually, but I haven't made much progress on it. I wanted to post this, though, 'cause I really like it. So yeah. Here it is.
