Scientists Turn Nuclear Waste Into a Battery
Energy needs need to be addressed. Consequently, there is one such group trying to address those needs in an unexpected way. Scientists at the University of Bristol have created a battery. So you may be asking yourself:
What’s so special about this battery?
Could it power a yellow submarine?
Firstly, the power for it is made from extracted Nickel-63 (with plans for Carbon-14) from nuclear waste. Also, the shape of the energy is compressed into a diamond battery. That’s right, a nuclear waste diamond battery.
With a life expectancy of thousands of years, a person with a pacemaker would never need another surgery to replace a battery. There could even be a secondary market for pacemaker batteries where the cost goes down per owner.

Furthermore, the scientists at @BristolUni are asking the public to come up with ideas for use with the diamond battery by using the hashtag #diamondbattery.
Having every energy need met while exploring space would be a great use. Actually, batteries meeting all energy needs would be outstanding.
There are other batteries in development. However, these devices don’t utilize recycled radioactive garbage, giving a second long-term life to something that is otherwise bad for us.
The scientists at the University of Bristol believe they have solutions to a few of the problems. This is summed up best by Professor Tom Scott1:
“There are no moving parts involved, no emissions generated and no maintenance required, just direct electricity generation. By encapsulating radioactive material inside diamonds, we turn a long-term problem of nuclear waste into a nuclear-powered battery and a long-term supply of clean energy.”
Finally, with this and other energy solutions in the works, the twenty-second century is looking to be better suited to providing everyone with energy.
