What are diamond color grades?
The color grading scale for diamonds is based on the GIA Certified Color Chart, which is one of the most commonly used standards in the industry.
The GIA Certified Diamond Color Scale was developed by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) and uses a color standard known as the “Principles of Identification”. The standard defines 10 grades ranging from D (colorless) to Z (Light).
The diamond color scale can be described as an example of a 4-point scale; there are 4 levels, A through D, and then there is also a fourth level that is not graded: it is just considered to be “colorless”.
A lot of people think that a diamond with a higher grade number means better quality or value. However, this isn’t always true. For example, if you have an ideal grade I diamond with an ideal color and clarity grade, it will still be worth more than an ideal I with lower grades but similar colors and clarity.

کوریل کا نیوز ایجنسی اے ایف پی سے گفتگو کرتے ہوئے مزید کہنا تھا، ’’یہ پتھر میرے لیے ہیروں کا لیونارڈو داوینچی ہے۔‘‘ تقریبا انیس قیراط کا یہ قیمتی ہیرا ایک صدی پہلے جنوبی افریقہ کی ایک کان سے ملا تھا، جسے سن انیس سو بیس کی دہائی میں تراشا گیا تھا اور اس کے بعد سے اسے تبدیل نہیں کیا گیا۔ اس نایاب ہیرے کی خریداری کے فورا بعد ہی اسے ’ونسٹن پِنک لےگیسی‘ کا نام دے دیا گیا ہے۔ کرسٹیز انٹرنیشنل کے جیولری ہیڈ راہول کاڈاکیا کا اس حوالے سے کہنا تھا، ’’یہ دنیا کے سب سے بہترین ہیروں میں سے ایک ہے۔‘‘ درجہ بندی کے لحاظ سے یہ نایاب ہیرا ’فینسی وِیوِڈ‘ درجے کا حامل ہے۔ یہ درجہ رنگ کی شدت اور ہیرے کے اعلیٰ ترین معیار کو دیکھتے ہوئے ہی دیا جاتا ہے۔ ماہرین کے مطابق دنیا بھر میں ہر سال ہیرے کی کانوں سے جتنے بھی ہیرے نکلتے ہیں، ان میں سے محض ایک فیصد قیمتی پتھر ہی گلابی رنگ کے ہوتے ہیں اور زیادہ تر گلابی ہیروں کا وزن ایک قیراط سے کم ہی ہوتا ہے۔
International Standards for Diamond Color

But this presents little problem for the investor who is mainly concerned with great HN above anyway. Colored grades range from colorless down to hockey tents of yellow which come from nitrogen and other impurities buffets in those two extremes the gradations are almost and perceptive. To the untrained eye of the Lehman a stone may appear colorless all the way down to the grade of J which is considered to be the bottom range of grades also considered cold near colorless. That grade may be fine as far as appearance is concerned for engagement rings or other jewelry purposes but an investor must be more discerning.

Diamond Color Treatments Explained
An important part of understanding colored diamonds is knowing the difference between natural and treated because there is a HUGE difference. We break it all down below so read on and learn about the 3 most common diamond color treatments.

Not all colored diamonds are rare. Only those that are created by Mother Nature carry prestige and value with them. Color-treated diamonds are essentially low-quality rocks with a makeover. Today, there are three commonly used types of treatment that produce colored diamonds – coating, HPHT and irradiation. These are all acceptable as long as the treatment is disclosed. It is completely unethical to present a treated stone as natural. To ensure a diamond has natural color, always look for “origin” on the GIA certificate.
Coating –
A less desirable diamond can be covered with a thin layer of chemical material to give it a new color. The coating can crack or chip, revealing the true color underneath. Sometimes, so it is less noticeable, the coating will be applied only to the girdle or pavilion of the stone.
HPHT –
A diamond can be exposed to high-pressure and high-temperature in a lab, similar to how diamonds form naturally, to permanently enhance their color. The process can be used on low color diamonds to make them colorless, pink, blue, green, yellowish green, or yellow (according to GIA.)
Irradiation –
A diamond can be exposed to radiation in a lab to permanently alter the stone’s crystal lattice structure, presenting a new color. Irradiation alone produces green diamonds but when combined with high heat, labs can produce blue, yellow, brown and black diamonds too.
Since diamonds can also be exposed to natural radiation, this type of treatment is practically undetectable without proper equipment. The only way to be absolutely certain the diamond is natural is to send it to a trusted lab for grading. However, irradiated diamonds will often display orange fluorescence and may have a higher concentration of color near the culet.
