"MARIA EUGENIA"

Born in Peru, Miami-based Diana Contreras, aka Didi, is driven to create and while her primary medium is oils she has painted murals all over the world. Didi says her uses whimsical portraiture embodies femininity and her style "emerges from her love of classical techniques infused with her passion for illustrations and street murals." In early 2020 Didi painted this Peruvian Mermaid—"Maria Eugenia"—outside Hialeah, Florida's Unbranded Brewing in the Leah Arts District.

“DANCING WITH WORDS”

Peru born Diana Contreras, aka Didi, has lived in Miami since the age of 5. Armed with formal training in Art Education—undergrad as well as graduate—from Florida International University, Didi has been making her presence known on the streets of Miami and is on a mission to prove street art is not just a man’s world. “It is important to showcase women in order to break the paradigms that women can’t do what men can do” she told Miami New Times, going on to say that she has seen support of women artists grow in recent years. Her “three muses” were painted in 2015 for the Miami Book Fair. The mural is on NW 2nd Avenue in Wynwood, on the side of the recently shuttered Play-In, a “multi-sensory activity center” that for almost 7 years provided space for children to run, jump, climb, explore, and create.  @didrok

Born in Peru, Diana Contreras, aka Didi, has been in Miami since age 5. She told Freshly Squeezed Fashionista that it's not always possible to do what you love "in a third-world country like Peru" and she never takes for granted the opportunity to pursue what she loves in this Land of Opportunity. After completing a program in Art Education Didi spent time studying in Florence and as a result her work combines the sexiness and passion of Miami with a romantic classical painting element. Underlying all of that however is a strong feminist urge to prove the place of women in a part of the art scene typically dominated by male artists, while portraying large feminine characters that still embrace their womanliness.
