I saw Atomic Blonde & even though I'm deeply hurt Delphine died (bc c'mon such static chemistry !!) They were staying true to the graphic novel, The Coldest City. In the book she had a male love interest (also a French operative) named Pierre Lasalle who died the same way she did. They didn't kill her off for shock factor & for that along with absolutely everything else the film has to offer, is why its a cinematic masterpiece of the summer. Pls don't go off on a movie that doesn't deserve it😩
I’m pretty sure they did their research since a part of their target audience is lgbtq+ … and they definitely heard of the dead lesbian trope, there’s no way around it. But they still decided that one of the characters who die is a lesbian, specifically a lesbian of color.
It’s not feminist. It’s not progressive. It’s hurting. A lot of people are hurt and disturbed by Delphine’s death and the way it’s portrayed in the movie.
So … good for you that you’re not that bothered by it but I think we should take into account the voices that are. The people that saw themselves in Delphine or in her relationship with Lorraine and were let down once again.
They could’ve changed the plot so she doesn’t die as easily as the changed her gender to make her female.
Thanks for your opinion, though.
